No. 1 Dayton pulls away late against St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s battled undefeated Dayton tough but the Pirates pulled away in the final period to post a 50-35 nonconference boys basketball victory at the Crusaders gym Tuesday.

“We battled with them for three quarters,” said St. Mary’s coach Eric Guyer, whose team trailed the top-ranked Class 3A team 32-31 going into the final period. “They executed in the fourth quarter and showed a lot of poise.”

The Crusaders (7-4) cut a 10-point halftime deficit to one by outscoring Dayton (9-0) 18-9 in the third quarter.

Connor Vinyard and Michael Crennen sparked the third-quarter charge by combining for 14 points and each finished the game with 12 points.

“Connor Vinyard and Michael led the comeback in the second half to make it close,” said Guyer. “Those two feed off each other.”

D.J. Flowers, a 6-foot-5 senior center, made 5 of 6 free throws in the final period and had 13 points to lead Dayton’s balanced attack.

The Pirates capitalized on a big edge in free-throw shooing — outscoring St. Mary’s by 14 points from the line.

“Our kids showed a lot of heart,” said Guyer. “(Dayton) did a good job of being aggressive and going to the rim. In the end they finished and we didn’t.”
