Late 3-pointers again derail Panthers

SALEM — South Medford was victimized by late 3-pointers for the second straight game and fell to South Salem, 69-68, in nonconference boys basketball Friday.

The Panthers led 67-63 with about 20 seconds left on a Craig Contreras free throw.

But South Salem’s Seth Erickson made a 3 with 14 seconds to go. After South Medford’s Eskari Carter hit one of two foul shots to push the Panthers’ lead to 68-66, the Saxons’ Ray Ruiz buried the game winner with six seconds remaining from 4 feet behind the 3-point arc.

On Tuesday, North Medford hit a last-second 3-pointer to force overtime, then defeated South Medford (6-4) for the Abby’s Holiday Classic crown.

The Panthers led 36-26 at halftime, but the Saxons went 10-for-15 from the field and hit 5 of 8 treys in the third period, outscoring the Panthers, 28-11.

Brayden Massey hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to rally the Panthers. Massey finished with 20 points, was 5 of 9 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

The Panthers’ Cam English grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and took three charges to go with eight points. Carter added 15 points and Contreras had nine points and seven assists.

GRANTS PASS 46, SOUTH ALBANY 38: At Grants Pass, in its fourth game in five days, Grants Pass sputtered offensively but came away with the nonconference win.

Sean Ryan registered 12 points, four assists and three steals for the Cavemen (4-5), who got nine points and three steals from J.C. McKinley.

MARIST 63, ASHLAND 42: At Eugene, already up 26-18, Marist buried Ashland with a third-quarter surge in the Midwestern League game.

The Spartans, who shot 51 percent (25-for-49) from the field, outscored the Grizzlies 24-11 in the third.

Collin Malcolm scored 18 points for Grizzlies (5-4).

FORTUNA 68, PHOENIX 38: At Brookings, Fortuna proved to be too much for Phoenix (4-5), holding the Pirates to a total of four points in the first and fourth quarters of the Brookings Harbor Tournament game.

Cole George scored 12 points and added seven rebounds for the Pirates.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 66, CRESWELL 65: At Salem, Jason Wyncoop and Christian Kammerzell each hit two big free throws in the final minute, giving Cascade Christian a four-point cushion it would need in the Salem Academy Tournament game.

Creswell made a desperation 3-pointer from beyond mid-court in the final seconds.

Wyncoop contributed 20 points, Kammerzell had 10 Brandon Winter scored 10 for the balanced Challengers (6-4).

NORTH LAKE 43, BUTTE FALLS 39: At Butte Falls, Wil Bateman scored 15 points and added seven rebounds for Butte Falls in the Mountain Valley League opener for both teams.

Alex Cool Hunsaker notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Loggers (0-10) while going 8-for-12 at the free-throw line.
