Setzer, Comets cruise in league opener

CENTRAL POINT — Senior post Courtney Setzer recorded 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead a balanced Crater attack as the Comets downed North Eugene, 65-41, in the Midwestern League girls basketball opener on Saturday.

Cheyenne Scott had 11 points and five steals, Bailey Bascom 10 points, Destiny Fahndrich nine points and Mallory Heard eight points and five rebounds for Crater, which led 22-10 after the first quarter.

The Comets knocked down four of their eight 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes to take command. The triples, combined with a tough press, overwhelmed the Highlanders.

“We jumped on them right off the bat,” said Crater head coach David Heard, whose squad was 8 of 17 from beyond the arc.

Crater (10-1, 1-0 MWL), which has won eight straight, tallied 18 assists on 25 baskets and recorded 12 steals.

Holly Sand scored 16 points for North Eugene (7-5, 0-1).

PHOENIX 67, ST. BERNARD 59: At Brookings, Bailee Tally had 24 points and Alexis De La Torre went for a career-high 17 points, 11 rebounds and six steals as Phoenix earned third place in the four-team Brookings Tournament.

Emma Hickman recorded 12 points and nine rebounds and Alyssa Wallack six points and six assists for the Pirates (4-5).
