Crater routs Marist in key MWL clash

CENTRAL POINT — Gunnar Asher caught fire from beyond the 3-point arc and the Crater boys basketball team couldn’t have asked for better execution on the defensive end.

Asher scored 25 points and the Comets came away with an impressive 63-42 Midwestern League victory over Marist at Crater High School.

Crater (10-3, 2-0 MWL) entered the game ranked No. 4 in the Class 5A media poll and Marist (8-4, 1-1) was sixth.

Asher made five 3-pointers to go with a number of screens with his sturdy 6-foot-2 frame that helped Crater get open looks on the offensive end and contributed to the Comets’ 10-for-20 effort from 3-point range.

The Comets’ Dean Orozco and Tanner Mallams were tasked with guarding Austin Tyner, Marist’s leading scorer. They helped hold Tyner to eight first-half points and then scoreless thereafter.

“The two of them did a phenomenal job locking him down,” said Crater interim coach Terry Rasmussen. “Team defense was our goal tonight and our goal was to lock them down.”

Race Reiter knocked down three treys and scored 20 points to go with six rebounds for Crater while point guard Christian Reyes doled out seven assists.

Taylor Kloke generated five rebounds, five assists and four steals to go with his four points for the Comets, who came up with eight steals while committing just seven turnovers.
