Wolfe’s late 3 lifts North Medford boys

It wasn’t necessarily the situation North Medford wanted to be in Friday night, but the Black Tornado boys basketball team was anything but panicked as the clock dwindled down against visiting Willamette in Southwest Conference play.

Trailing 50-48 with under 20 seconds to play, North Medford got the ball into the hands of senior point guard Tristen Holmes and he once again made a good decision in finding junior Tyren Wolfe, whose 3-pointer with six seconds to play lifted the Tornado to a 51-50 triumph.

“It’s not like I like to play them but it was another clutch shot by another one of our guys in Tyren Wolfe,” said North Medford head coach Scott Plankenhorn, whose team is ranked fifth in the Class 6A coaches poll. “He’s got confidence in his shot and we all have confidence in any number of guys because they’re working at shooting the ball behind the line all the time.”

“That’s three game-winners off Tristen’s passes,” added the coach. “It’s nice to know he’s willing to make the extra (pass) when it’s needed.”

Brian Schireman paced North Medford (10-2, 1-1 SWC) with 15 points and Holmes had nine points and seven assists. Tucker Barry added 11 points before fouling out and the Tornado got seven rebounds apiece from Jared Faust and Edmund Polataivao.

Wolfe finished with seven points and his 3-pointer was only the third in 15 attempts North converted against Willamette (2-8, 0-2), which got 14 points from Patrick Goddard.
