Black Tornado trips up Colts in OT

SPRINGFIELD — Following Tristen Holmes’ tremendous first-half performance, Brian Schireman and Tucker Barry awoke in the fourth quarter and in overtime to put the Black Tornado over the top on Friday.

Schireman hit several fourth-quarter baskets to help the Black Tornado rally in the fourth quarter and then hit a 3-pointer in overtime to solidify North Medford’s 68-63 victory over host Thurston.

With the Black Tornado (11-2, 2-0 Southwest Conference) up by one point with less than a minute left in OT, Barry slashed into the paint and passed back out to the wing for Schireman, who knocked down a triple to pad North’s lead. The Colts were forced to foul thereafter and Barry obliged by hitting 3 of 4 from the free-throw line to sew up the win.

Thurston led 56-52 late in the fourth quarter, but Holmes and Schireman hit consecutive baskets to tie it, 56-all. On Thurston’s next possession, Schireman came up with a steal and was fouled en route to the basket. Schireman knocked down both ensuing free throws to go up 58-56 but after Thurston knotted it 58-all, neither team managed to score in the final minute of regulation to force OT.

Holmes scored 18 of North Medford’s 25 first-half points and finished with 28. He was 12-for-24 from the field to go with eight rebounds and six assists. Neither Barry nor Schireman scored in the first half, but Barry finished with 12 points and Schireman 10.

Barry added four steals as did Tyren Wolfe while Isaiah Williams scored eight points off the bench for North Medford, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Devon Baggitt paced the Colts with 17 points and Cade Bates added 15.
