Crater boys deny Eagle Point

EAGLE POINT — With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, Crater's Christian Reyes delivered in the clutch.

Reyes tallied a game-high 23 points but, more important, was perfect from the free-throw line in the final period as the Comets defeated Eagle Point 58-43 in Midwestern League boys basketball Tuesday.

Crater (11-5, 3-2 MWL) jumped on Eagle Point early — grabbing an 18-9 opening-period lead — but the Eagles (6-7, 1-3) rallied to knot the score 39-all entering the fourth quarter.

"We came out playing the way we wanted to play," Crater coach Terry Rasmussen said, "but we didn't sustain our defensive pressure in the second and third quarters. That's a mental attitude we're working on."

Reyes, a senior point guard, led Crater's 13-for-14 performance from the foul line in the fourth quarter with an 8-for-8 effort..

"The key with Christian is to play a balanced game," said Rasmussen. "When he needed to attack we cut him loose."

Crater scored the first six points of the fourth and eventually the Eagles were forced into fouling.

"That put them on their heels," said Rasmussen. "The free throw shooting was critical. The guys stepped to the line confident and knocked them down."

The Comets got 15 points and nine rebounds from Gunnar Asher and Race Reiter contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

David Barber paced the Eagles with 11 points and Jax Bell did a good job battling on the boards inside to go with eight points.
