Crater girls stun Springfield in OT

CENTRAL POINT — Crater's leading scorer Courtney Setzer couldn't find the basket through three quarters in a key Midwestern League girls basketball matchup against Springfield on Friday.

But Setzer got it together late and helped the Comets rally for a 45-43 overtime home victory.

Springfield entered the game unbeaten in league and just a half-game behind Comets (16-1, 6-0 MWL) for first place in the league.

Crater trailed 10-0 after the first quarter and 29-20 entering the final period.

"We were behind the whole game," Crater coach David Heard said. "It looked like we had no chance."

Setzer had missed 17 consecutive field goals until her only basket of the game gave Crater a one-point lead with 20 seconds left in overtime. The 6-foot senior post followed that with a pair of made free throws to put the Comets ahead by three with six seconds remaining.

Springfield (9-7, 4-1) cut the Comets' lead to 44-43 on two free throws with three seconds left, then Setzer made one of two from the line with .5 seconds to seal the victory.

Setzer led the Comets with 14 points — all coming in the fourth quarter and overtime — and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Destiny Fahndrich added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Comets, who outrebounded Springfield 41-30. Mallory Heard had 10 points and Crater also capitalized on 25 Springfield turnovers.

"It was one of the craziest games," said coach Heard. "We couldn't do anything for 3½ quarters. We played as hard as we've played all year but it was missed layup after missed layup.”
