North Medford finishes first at Sutherlin

SUTHERLIN — North Medford crowned five champions en route to the team title at the Sutherlin Wrestling Classic on Saturday.

The Black Tornado, the only Class 6A school in the 17-team field, scored 215 points. Glide, a perennial 3A power, finished second (145) and host Sutherlin was third (117.5).

Among other local schools, North Valley was sixth (69), Ashland was 11th (43.5), Hidden Valley placed 13th (34) and Cascade Christian finished 15th (16.5).

"We wrestled good," North Medford coach Phillip Lopez said. "Just because it's a small-school tournament doesn't mean there's not a lot of good wrestlers."

The Black Tornado took home the two major individual honors. Dillon Ulrey was awarded the top lower-weight wrestler and defending state champion Trent Wilson received the same recognition in the upper-weight category.

Ulrey won the 145-pound classification with a 12-7 decision over Glide's Devin Freeman, a 3A state runner-up in 2014.

"(Ulrey) knows what he had to do," said Lopez. "It was a good hard-fought match in the finals."

Wilson captured the 195-pound title with a 2-1 decision against William Beard of Glide in three overtimes

Other Black Tornado champions were Luke Mackey (132), Cole Hornbrook (152) and Skylar Black (220).

Mackey won on a forfeit over teammate Nico Baldovino in the finals.

"They wrestle each other enough in practice," said Lopez. "They didn't need to prove anything."

North received additional second-place performances from Justin Guyer (160) and Wyatt Westfall (170).

North Valley's Ricky Esparza won at 120 and Cascade Christian received a third-place from Max Valle.

"As a team, we did a lot of good stuff," said Lopez. "Overall we really stepped up and finished."

LOWELL 1A STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT: At Lowell, junior Luke McGonagle and freshman Isaac Tiry registered runner-up finishes and Butte Falls placed fifth in the team standings.

McGonagle finished second at 195, while Tiry lost in the 126-pound championship match.

The Loggers also received a third-place effort from junior Matt Palamino (285) and junior Spencer Scofield took fourth at 160.
