Comets remain unbeaten in MWL

EUGENE — Crater senior Courtney Setzer managed 23 points and nine rebounds but the third-ranked Comets had to hold their breath down the stretch in staving off host North Eugene for a 42-39 girls basketball victory Friday.

Crater took control of the Midwestern League clash with an 18-10 surge in the third quarter but North Eugene scratched back to have possession with five seconds to go and a chance to tie before a turnover sealed the outcome.

The Comets (17-1, 7-0 MWL) struggled from 3-point range (1-for-11) and missed three free throws in the final 90 seconds to make things interesting.

“We just wish we were playing better right now,” said Crater head coach David Heard, “but we’re winning so I guess that’s what counts.”

Cheyenne Scott had eight points and Destiny Fahndrich added six rebounds and four points for Crater.

Sierra Carrier led North Eugene (11-8, 3-4) with 15 points.
