Crater boys cruise past Highlanders

CENTRAL POINT — Crater turned in one of its most complete efforts of the season in rolling to a 70-31 victory over North Eugene in Midwestern League boys basketball Friday.

The Comets (13-5, 5-2 MWL) came up with 14 steals and committed only nine turnovers against the Highlanders (1-18, 0-7), who were put into a hole early as Crater roared to a 35-12 halftime lead.

Race Reiter scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half to pace Crater, while Gunnar Asher took over with 15 of his 17 in the second half. Tanner Mallams added 11 points, and Christian Reyes had a solid all-around effort with nine assists and three steals.

“Reyes just did a great job distributing the ball and probably played his best defensive game of the year,” said Crater interim head coach Terry Rasmussen, whose team is ranked ninth in the latest Class 5A media poll.

Reiter finished with 10 rebounds, Asher had seven rebounds and four assists, Matt Martin had six rebounds and Taylor Kloke added eight rebounds and three steals.

MARIST 50, ASHLAND 38: At Ashland, Collin Malcolm led Ashland with 15 points but the Grizzlies stumbled after the start of the fourth quarter in the Midwestern League game.

After Walker Shibley-Styer hit a 3-pointer to pull Ashland within three at the start of the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies (9-7, 3-4 MWL) turned the ball over on their next four possessions.

Shibley-Styer scored nine points for Ashland.

SPRINGFIELD 70, EAGLE POINT 56: At Springfield, Eagle Point senior Ra’eed Sowell scored 16 points and the Eagles got 11 points apiece from Jacob Shelton and Ethan DeVore in the Midwestern League loss.

Eagle Point (6-10, 1-6 MWL) was hindered by a 22-11 third-quarter surge by Springfield (11-6, 6-1).

NORTH VALLEY 47, PHOENIX 29: At Merlin, Phoenix received 12 points and six rebounds from Kyle Botermans and Thomas Skaff added eight points in the Skyline Conference defeat.

Thor Whitmore had 12 points and Chris Morsa added 10 for North Valley (17-2, 6-0 Skyline), which led 17-2 after one quarter over Phoenix (5-14, 1-5).
