Hunters lead North swimmers to victory

North Medford was paced by standout efforts from Lauren Hunter and Joey Hunter to secure a pair of swimming victories over South Medford in Southwest Conference action at the Medford YMCA on Saturday.

Lauren Hunter won the 50 free in 26 seconds and the 100 back in 1:03.54 to go with a pair of relay victories as North Medford’s girls team earned a 114-55 victory.

Joey Hunter won the 50 free (23.53) and 100 free (53.09) and was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay as the Black Tornado boys edged the Panthers, 86-81.

South Medford’s Julia Miller earned a pair of wins in the 200 I.M. (2:35.49) and 500 free (6:05.18) to pace her squad. Tanner Blaydon (200 I.M. and 100 back) and Garrison Einck (500 free and 100 breast) also won a pair of events to lead the Panther boys.

PHOENIX SPLITS MEET: At North Bend, Phoenix junior Lauren Speaks finished first in the 200 I.M. (2:24.97) and 100 breast (1:12.73) to pace the Pirate girls in a three-team meet that included North Bend and St. Mary’s.

Host North Bend easily swept the girls matchups, topping Phoenix 199-74 and St. Mary’s 207.5-52.5. Phoenix topped St. Mary’s 124-69.

In boys action, Ethan Shepherd of Phoenix won the 50 free (23.69) and 100 fly (59.80) and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay. Chris Ball of St. Mary’s won the 100 free in 56.39.

Phoenix swept the boys matchups, 174-30 over St. Mary’s and 135-110 over North Bend. The Crusaders lost 120-30 to North Bend.

Boys Basketball

TRIAD 71, PROSPECT 55: At Klamath Falls, Darren Stillwagon turned in 18 points to lead Prospect in the Mountain Valley League contest.

Devin Shelie, Sean Derr and Wade May each had 10 points for the Cougars (10-9, 6-4 MVL), who trailed 41-23 at halftime.

BUTTE FALLS 66, PAISLEY 39: At Paisley, Alex Cool-Hunsaker had a career-high 27 points with seven rebounds and Wil Bateman turned in 22 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals as Butte Falls picked up its second win of the year.

Jimmy Kinyon grabbed 14 rebounds for the Loggers (2-18, 2-9 Mountain Valley League), who led 30-13 at halftime.

Girls Basketball

PAISLEY 32, BUTTE FALLS 29, OT: At Paisley, Raleigh Weaver went for 13 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks for Butte Falls during Mountain Valley League action.

Katie Munsell had four points and five steals and Shawna Creech eight rebounds and four steals for the Loggers (11-9, 6-5 MVL), who rallied after trailing 14-5 at halftime.

TRIAD 38, PROSPECT 21: At Klamath Falls, Triad cruised in the Mountain Valley League game.

Prospect dropped to 6-12 overall, 3-8 in league.

Wrestling

CHILOQUIN TOURNEY: At Chiloquin, Matt Palomino took second place at 285 pounds and Spencer Scofield (160) placed third for Butte Falls at the Chiloquin Tournament.

Mazama captured the team title.
