Knights turn back Cascade Christian

MERLIN — Cascade Christian went in search of good competition on Saturday and got just that in North Valley, which held off a second-half rally to secure a 62-48 boys basketball victory in its home gym.

“They are a very strong team and it was good for us,” said Cascade Christian head coach Brian Morse. “We played hard, we just didn’t rebound as well as we should have and that was the big difference in the game. They had a lot of second-chance points that really hurt us.”

The Class 4A Knights (19-2) used a strong start by senior guard Matt Fairman to build a 36-25 lead by halftime. Fairman scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, including both of his 3-pointers.

Chris Morsa added 19 points and Cody Thompson had 17 for North Valley.

The 3A Challengers (12-9) whittled their deficit to two points in the third quarter following a 9-0 run and later were within five points in the fourth before the Knights pulled away.

Jason Wyncoop had 14 points and Brandon Winter added nine points and eight rebounds to pace Cascade Christian, which next hosts St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a pivotal Southern Cascade League game.
