Setzer, Comets pick up MWL honors

The Crater girls basketball team was rewarded for a stellar regular season with several Midwestern League honors after recent voting by coaches.

Senior post Courtney Setzer was named the league player of the year after averaging 18 points, 8.8 rebounds, two assists, 2.9 steals and two blocks per game for the Comets (22-11, 11-1 MWL), who finished as conference co-champions with Springfield.

Teammate Destiny Fahndrich (9.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, two assists and two steals per game) landed a spot on the first team, and Crater’s David Heard was given co-coach of the year honors with Springfield’s Bill Wagner.

The Comets will host a first-round Class 5A state playoff game on Saturday.

Eagle Point’s Sydney May and Ashland’s Georgia Williams also made the MWL first team. May averaged 14.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from 2-point range for the Eagles (12-11).

Williams turned in 14,9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 2.7 steals and 2.2 assists on average while shooting 30 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line for the Grizzlies (7-15).

On the boys side, Crater saw Race Reiter and Christian Reyes make the first team.

Reiter averaged 15.9 points, seven rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting 63 percent from two-point territory and 50 percent from 3-point range.

Reyes averaged 13 points and 4.3 assists while shooting 47 percent from 3-point range.

Ashland’s Collin Malcolm made the first team after averaging 14.5 points, nine rebounds, two steals and 1.5 blocks.
