Crater boys fall short in 5A play-in game

CENTRAL POINT — Crater's Race Reiter received plenty of attention from the Central Panthers in a boys basketball Class 5A state play-in game Tuesday.

Despite being double- and triple-teamed, Reiter went for a game-high 24 points but the Comets fell 51-41 to visiting Central from Independence at the Crater High gym.

"They came to play," Crater coach Terry Rasmussen said. "They're very efficient and every possession is valued. It was one of those games where the ball bounced their way and not ours."

The Comets (17-8), the fourth-place team from the Midwestern League, trailed the entire contest.

"We kept crawling back into the game and they would make a run," said Rasmussen, "We could never quite get where we wanted to be."

Reiter, a 6-foot-7 senior post, was 8-for-14 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. He also had seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

"Our game plan was to pound it into (Reiter)," said Rasmussen. "Most of the night they were sagging back on him but he was establishing himself well down low and we were getting it into him."

Crater point guard Christian Reyes had five assists and did a good job getting the ball to Reiter and senior post Gunnar Asher, who scored nine points.

Dean Orozco, a Comet senior guard, went scoreless but was effective on the defensive end.

"Dean Orozco was pivotal in keeping us in the game defensively," said Rasmussen. "He really did a great job."

Central (14-10) was led by senior post Kaj Bansen’s 20 points.

"We were a little impatient at times," said Rasmussen, "but I really loved our hustle. We kept fighting back."

Central, the No. 5 team out of the Mid-Willamette Conference, advances to a first-round playoff game at Marist in Eugene on Friday.
