Panthers kick off year with win
Sophomore pitcher Pat Moore and the South Medford softball team opened the year with a 3-1 win over Forest Grove during nonleague action on Friday at South Medford High.
Pat Moore threw a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and three walks and Hannah Newman had the go-ahead RBI in the third inning after Rachael Moore led off with a triple for the Panthers.
Newman finished 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and Pat Moore went 2-for-4 for South, which committed just one error.
Newman drove in Pat Moore in the first inning and Marissa Tarazon added some insurance with an RBI in the sixth.
The Panthers, who advanced to the Class 6A state semifinals last year, were happy with the start.
"We wanted to swing the bats well today, execute and get Pat some innings," South Medford head coach Miranda Gillespie-Smith said. "For our first game, we checked some things off our list of things that we've been working on."
