Miscues cost North Medford in Vegas setback
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Although the North Medford baseball team did not commit an error, miscues and lack of execution doomed the Black Tornado against host Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, Nev. on Monday.
The Black Tornado walked five batters and was pinned with two catcher interferences in a 6-4 loss.
“We outplayed them, had more hits and were the better prepared team,” said North Medford coach Brett Wolfe. “We just didn’t execute and gave up nine free bases. When you play good teams, you have to limit baserunners. But the season is young and we have to find our rhythm. It was just lack of execution.”
Trailing 6-2, the Black Tornado (1-1) scored two in the top of the seventh inning when Jordan Ragan doubled to score Greyson Wolff and Troy Fowler’s single brought Ragan home.
Ragan drove in two runs and went 2-for-3, as did Fowler and Josh Berman.
Ragan (0-1), Kendrick (6) and Wolff; Coffey, Fredrickson (5), Pisminezky (6), Zrech (7) and Rainone. W — Fredrickson. L — Ragan (0-1). 2B — NM: Berman, Ragan.
EAGLE POINT WINS TWO: Megan Ayres tossed a four-hitter and drove in three runs to power Eagle Point past Hillsboro, 6-1, in the Medford Tournament at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
The Eagles (4-0) also topped South Eugene 21-5 in a later contest in which 10 Eagles had hits. Kylene Briggs smashed a two-run home run in the second inning and Ayres picked up her second win of the day.
The Eagles, who are the only team from Southern Oregon in the event, take on La Salle Prep today at 3 p.m.
NORTH LOSES TWO: At Portland, North Medford dropped a pair of nonconference games, 10-3 to Westview and 6-5 to Jesuit.
Against Westview, which scored seven runs in the first two innings to take command, Grace Jovanovic had two of North Medford’s four hits and Teanna Gonsalves doubled.
Against Jesuit, Gonsalves ripped a three-run home run to highlight the Black Tornado’s four-run fourth inning.
Taelor Mayben was 2-for-4 for North Medford (1-2).

Teresa Lehman went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs to help the Grizzlies grab a 14-4 victory over Nampa in five innings. Grace Lenthe, Delaney Rodriguez, Nora Honeycutt and McKenna Read each went 2-for-3.
Georgia Williams went the distance, allowing four runs — all unearned — on just four hits with four strikeouts for the Grizzlies (3-1).
Lenthe yielded just three hits over seven innings in Ashland’s 8-2 triumph over Redmond. Lehman, Hannah Teixiera, Gianni Pippa-Baker and Anay Philpott all collected two hits.
