Mustangs claim Fourth of July crown

RENO, Nev. — Will Weaver pitched a complete-game shutout and Micah Brown went 4-for-4 with two RBIs as the Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA baseball team blanked the Sierra Sun Devils, 6-0, in the Fourth of July Tournament championship at Reno High on Sunday.

The crown at the 16-team tournament is the club’s first since 2012.

Weaver, who was named outstanding pitcher of the tournament, allowed four hits and two walks with no strikeouts.

Brown, the player of the tournament, drove in Cole Carder and Tate Cowden with his single in the second inning.

Eric Carlson finished 3-for-4 and Carder 2-for-3 for the Mustangs (22-8), who went 5-1 in Reno.

Medford had 13 hits and no errors on Sunday.

Horse Racing

GRANTS PASS DOWNS: At Grants Pass, jockey Jake Samuels captured four wins during racing at Grants Pass Downs.

He won the third, fifth and sixth races, while Kassie Guglielmino secured victories in the first and fourth races.

Two trainers claimed two wins: Hector Magallanes and Charlene Whiteside.

In the sixth race, Focus Now — owned and trained by Grants Pass’ Nancy Klapatch — prevailed. Meanwhile, Keepherrockin picked up a pair of victories and now has six wins in its last nine starts at GPD.

The final weekend of racing begins Saturday with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. and post time at 1 p.m. Those who are 60 and older or who are wearing a fedora get in free in honor of Don Jackson Day.

BEND 9, MEDFORD 4: At Bend, the Bend Elks swept the three-game West Coast League series.

Danny Mayer hit a solo home run in the ninth inning for Medford (11-13), which tied the game at 3 in the top of the sixth inning before the Elks (22-5) scored four in the bottom of the frame.

Mayer — who has seven homers this summer — finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and teammate Daniel Patzlaff was 2-for-4 with a run.

The Rogues host Corvallis at 6:35 p.m. today.
