Mustangs club way into title game
The Medford Mustangs continued their power surge on Saturday, belting one home run in each of their games to wrap up pool play and secure a spot in the championship game of the Fourth of July Tournament at Reno High in Nevada.
Medford traveled to the tourney without a home run under its belt but pushed that number to four in three days as Micah Brown’s grand slam helped the Mustangs earn a 13-3, six-inning win over Yuba City and Josh Berman’s solo homer highlighted an 8-1 victory over Oaks Baseball Club.
The Mustangs (21-8) will take on the Sierra Sun Devils at 2 p.m. today in the championship game of the 16-team event.
While the home runs were notable so, too, were the pitching performances by Colton Westfall and Jordan Ragan. Each pitcher went the distance and neither walked a batter, with Westfall striking out eight and allowing five hits by Yuba City while Ragan struck out five and allowed four hits by Oaks Baseball.
Brown’s second-inning grand slam highlighted a six-run frame for Medford against Yuba City, and he finished with five RBIs overall. Tate Cowden was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and Jared Evans 2-for-3 with one run to help the cause. Medford also got RBIs from Ragan, Eric Carlson, Greyson Wolff and Cole Carder.
Against Oaks Baseball, Berman smacked a fifth-inning home run off the wall and finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Carder was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Bryce Rogan had a two-run double in the fourth inning and Evans managed two RBIs.

BEND 8, MEDFORD 4: At Bend, Medford’s attempts at a comeback fell short in dropping a second straight West Coast League game against South Division rival Bend.
The Rogues (11-12) trailed 7-1 through three innings against the WCL-leading Elks (21-5) before a late attempt at a rally.
Medford, which is second in the WCL South to Bend, scored twice in the seventh inning on a two-run single by Andrew Martinez that plated T.K. McWhertor and J.J. Kitaoka to make it 7-3. In the eighth, Dan Mayer doubled and scored on a single by Billy Fredrick.
A second-inning triple by Tony Roque led to Medford’s first run on an RBI single by Kitaoka. Roque and Kitaoka each finished 2-for-4.
Game 3 of the series will be at 1:05 p.m. today.
