Tostenson, Anderson win pre-district races

CENTRAL POINT — Crater freshman Jantz Tostenson and Hidden Valley junior Zaruba Anderson put their best foot forward Wednesday to win the boys and girls 5,000-meter races, respectively, in the Skyline/Midwestern Pre-District cross country meet at the Jackson County Expo.

Tostenson won the informal boys race in a time of 17 minutes, 6 seconds, edging Ashland senior Raymond Impara by one second at the finish line.

The Comets, who posted four of the top five times, ran away with the boys team title with 20 points. Ashland (43) and Churchill (87) were next.

Anderson was a runaway winner in the girls race as she finished in 20:20, which was 27 seconds faster than Ashland senior Christine Impara.

The Grizzlies managed three of the top five girls times and won with 21 points ahead of Crater (36) and Churchill (92).

Boys Soccer

EAGLE POINT 7, KLAMATH UNION 0: At Klamath Falls, Eagle Point sophomore Miguel Robledo scored a hat trick and junior Christian Bustinza added two goals in the nonconference rout.

Cody Silani and Lucas Gomez also scored for the Eagles (2-0), who led 6-0 at halftime.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 10, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1: At Cave Junction, Ryan Vidlak scored a hat trick and Cascade Christian got two goals apiece from Travis Cave, Ethan Hoffman and Jesse Fretz to win the District 5 opener in a rout.

Zack Booker also scored for the Challengers (1-0, 1-0 Dist. 5), while Huver Rodriguez netted a penalty kick for Illinois Valley (0-1, 0-1).

ST. MARY’S 5, PACIFIC 0: Five different players scored to lead St. Mary’s to the nonconference victory at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Austin Pena, Weston Grant and Bryce Parsons each scored first-half goals for the Crusaders (2-2), while Preston Jernigan and Justin Hawkins tallied in the second half. Earning assists were Hunter Rothfus and Alec Robertson.

LAKEVIEW 4, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Rogue River, Lakeview pitched a shutout in the District 5 and season opener for both teams and saw Juan Moreno score two goals and assist another.

Eddie Ruiz and Axel Hernandez also scored for the Honkers, while Conner Hamilton earned an assist.

Girls Soccer

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 7, DOUGLAS 0: At Winston, Makenzie Hickman scored four goals and Cascade Christian played a much more controlled game to earn its first win in three tries.

Erika Worthington, Emily Stephens and Janessa Rivas also scored for the Challengers (1-2), while Audrey Quast secured the shutout in goal with two saves.

Volleyball

PHOENIX 3, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 1: At Brookings, Phoenix showed good communication between the front and back rows and defended well to earn its first win of the season, 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17.

Lyzett Gutierrez led the way with 21 digs, while Kassidy Calhoun added nine aces and Ana Macias-Montoya doled out 18 assists. Lindsey Burns contributed eight kills for the Pirates (1-1).
