Hawkins, Brown lead Challengers to SCL sweep

The Cascade Christian volleyball team used a strong attack to sweep Illinois Valley, 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 in Southern Cascade League action at Cascade Christian Tuesday.

Claire Hawkins and Ellie Brown each had 12 kills for the Challengers (8-1, 2-0 SCL), who have won eight straight.

Caroline McMahon recorded eight kills and four aces and Alyssa Brown registered 29 assists.

Allison Winter, Brown and McMahon all served well against the Cougars (2-6, 1-1), Cascade Christian head coach Rob Kleker said.

The Challengers had 46 kills as a team.

"I was pleased with our attack," Kleker said. "We were aggressive at the service line and at the net."

SOUTH EUGENE 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: North Medford gave South Eugene a stiff test but hitting errors proved costly in a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 SWC home loss.

Emily Carter, a senior outside, led the Black Tornado (6-7, 3-2 SWC) with 13 kills and 13 digs. Other North leaders were Karen Polataivao (six kills) and junior setter Taelor Mayben (11 assists, four aces).

GRANTS PASS 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: At Grants Pass, Grants Pass registered its first SWC victory against winless South Medford, 25-20, 25-20, 25-15.

South Medford fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in league, while Grants Pass is 1-4 in the SWC and 2-7 on the season.

Elliott Cook had six kills, four blocks and three aces and Jenaya Wright six kills and four blocks for the Cavers.

CRATER 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Central Point, Crater’s consistent hitting proved too much for Eagle Point in a 25-19, 25-12, 25-23 MWL victory.

The Comets (8-3, 3-1 MWL) were led by Nicole Morse and Destiny Fahndrich, who combined for 20 kills and 25 digs.

For Eagle Point (3-8, 0-4), Aliah Darling had nine kills and eight digs, Shaelynn Grady came up with 11 digs and Kylene Briggs scooped a team-high 12 digs.

MAZAMA 3, PHOENIX 0: At Phoenix, Mazama’s attack gave Phoenix difficulties in the 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 home Skyline loss.

Lyzett Gutierrez paced the Pirates (3-7, 0-2 Sky) with 15 digs and three aces.

ST. MARY'S 3, ROGUE RIVER 1: Freshman Hallie Shean was 32 of 39 serving with nine aces and Madi Christensen had 11 kills and three blocks for St. Mary’s in a 23-25, 25-8, 25-14, 25-13 win during Southern Cascade League play.

Sarah Thisted added seven kills and Mackenzie Addington 10 digs for the Crusaders (7-6, 1-0 SCL).

Bella Dodson had 25 digs, Courtney Sakraida 20 digs and Morgan McKown five kills for Rogue River (0-8, 0-2).

PROSPECT 3, BUTTE FALLS 2: At Prospect, Prospect edged Butte Falls, 25-20, 18-25, 25-8, 23-25, 15-12, during Mountain Valley League action.

Baley VanWormer recorded 15 kills, Ashli Rigel 10 kills and libero Marissa Raines 32 digs for the Cougars (5-3, 1-1 MVL).

Raleigh Weaver had 19 kills and Katie Munsell seven kills for the Loggers (4-3, 1-1).

CHILOQUIN 3, RV ADVENTIST 2: At Chiloquin, Rogue Valley Adventist jumped out to a 2-0 lead but dropped a close MVL five-setter, 15-25, 20-25, 28-26, 25-12, 15-13.

The Red Tail Hawks fell to 0-2 in league and 1-3 overall.
