St. Mary’s boys cruise past Challengers

St. Mary’s broke open a close match with three second-half goals to secure a 5-1 boys soccer victory over Cascade Christian in District 5 play Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Alec Robertson scored a hat trick for the Crusaders (6-2, 5-0 Dist. 5), while Hunter Rothfus added a key goal in the waning minute of the first half and Luka Cvijanovic scored on a header to wrap things up for St. Mary’s.

Robertson got the scoring started in the opening minutes off a pass near the top of the box by Rothfus. Midway through the first half, Cascade Christian’s Travis Cave scored an equalizer after winning a scramble for a teammate’s shot off the crossbar and finding the net for the Challengers (3-2, 3-1).

St. Mary’s regained momentum in the final minute of the first half when Rothfus dribbled through the defense and scored at the far post for a 2-1 halftime advantage.

The Crusaders dominated the second half, with Rothfus setting Robertson up for goals twice in the first 20 minutes. Cvijanovic closed the scoring by converting a corner kick from Bryce Parsons.

Cascade Christian suffered a tough loss early in the first half when sophomore defender Zach Booker was lost due to a broken clavicle, according to head coach Terry Fretz.
