Guitron, Owings power Panthers past Ashland

Hersson Guitron and Kyle Owings tallied two goals apiece as the South Medford boys soccer team broke loose in the second half to top Ashland, 7-2, in a nonconference game at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park Thursday.

Guitron gave the Panthers (4-1-2) the lead in the 15th minute but Ashland tied it 1-all by halftime.

Owing sandwiched goals in the 43rd and 62nd minutes around a Guitron tally (assisted by Charlie Stringer) in the 50th minute.

The Panthers’ other goals were by John Henry Gaffney (67th) and Eric Peregrina (70th).

Diego Rodriguez scored in the final minute for the Panthers.

PHOENIX 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 0: At Talent, freshman Christian Camacho polished off his hat trick early in the second half in the Skyline Conference victory.

Camacho scored in the 14th minute on a setup by Danny Uribe and in the 27th on a through ball from Jesus Sixtos.

In the 45th, Camacho wrestled the ball from Hidden Valley’s goalkeeper and punched it through for the Pirates (4-1, 2-0 Skyline), who outshot the Mustangs 16-2 and owned a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks.

HIDDEN VALLEY 5, PHOENIX 1: At Grants Pass, Guillermina Rodriguez broke the ice for Phoenix with a second-half goal.

The Pirates dropped to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in Skyline.


WILLAMETTE 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 2: At Eugene, South Medford won the first two sets before Willamette rallied for a 23-25, 18-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-10 Southwest Conference victory.

Willamette (1-8, 1-5 SWC) got 13 kills from Evelyn Montoya.

South Medford is 0-8 and 0-6.

SHELDON 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Grants Pass, Grants Pass wasn’t able to conjure enough offense in a 25-9, 25-9, 25-12 loss to Sheldon.

The Cavers (2-7, 1-4 Southwest Conference) received seven kills and three blocks from Elliott Cook and nine digs by Haley Dougherty.

McKenna Musser added 10 assists and Halleigh Noga five kills for Grants Pass.

ASHLAND 3, SPRINGFIELD 1: At Eugene, Ashland rallied from an opening loss for a 23-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 Midwestern League win at Churchill High.

Myla Norvell had 13 kills and 20 digs and Karlie Richardson 38 assists.

Marina Tacconi added 10 kills, Payton Onesti nine aces and Lili Smith six kills and five blocks for the Grizzlies (11-4, 4-1 MWL), who won their fifth straight.

NORTH VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 0: At Merlin, Phoenix (3-8, 0-3 Skyline Conference) fell 25-9, 25-11, 25-13 win.

ST. MARY’S 3, LAKEVIEW 1: At Lakeview, St. Mary’s Madi Christensen had 11 kills and two blocks as the Crusaders won the Southern Cascade League match, 26-24, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18.

Sarah Thisted had eight kills and Ashley Rietmann 22 assists for St. Mary’s (8-6, 2-0 SCL). Mackenzie Addington was 19-for-19 serving with three aces and Emily Johnson 12-for-12 with two aces.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, ROGUE RIVER 2: At Rogue River, Illinois Valley endured a seesaw battle for a 26-25, 16-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12 Southern Cascade League win.

The Chieftains (0-8, 0-2 SCL) received 20 digs, six kills and a pair of aces from Courtney Sakraida, and Bella Dodson amassed 20 digs.

Briana Morales registered 15 aces, seven digs and three aces and Della Birdsall had seven kills, three aces and a couple blocks for Rogue River.
