Vale drops Challengers at state
FOREST GROVE — Cascade Christian surrendered leads in the first two games and went on to lose to Vale, 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16 in the opening round of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament Friday at Forest Grove High.
The Challengers (21-3), who finished third in last year’s tournament, will play Glide in the consolation semifinals at 10 a.m. today.
“(Vale) did a great job of keeping the pressure on us with the serve,” said Cascade Christian coach Rob Kleker. “And their defense was amazing. When we got around their block they dug it up. It was really hard for us to score points.”
Claire Hawkins and Ellie Brown had 10 kills apiece to lead the Challengers’ front line. Hawkins added four assists and Brown had four blocks.
Cascade Christian received 34 assists from senior setter Alyssa Brown and Aubrey Kievit came up with 21 digs and three aces.
“I was impressed with Vale,” said Kleker. “They’re super disciplined. They stayed in their lanes and passed the ball tremendously well.”
LEBANON 3, ASHLAND 0: At Hillsboro, second-ranked Lebanon, the Mid-Willamette Conference champion, knocked Ashland into the consolation bracket of the Class 5A state tournament with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 victory at Liberty High.
The Grizzlies (22-8) are matched against Silverton in today’s consolation semifinals at 10 a.m.
Boys Water Polo
ASHLAND 15, BEND 6: At Corvallis, three Ashland players scored three goals each as the Grizzlies advanced to next weekend’s state championships with the state playoff victory Thursday.
Ashland will open state versus Mountain View at 1:20 p.m. Friday in Corvallis.
Against Bend, Devon Lancaster had three goals three steals and one assists, Luke Abell contributed three goals, two steals and one assist and Finn Griffin added three goals, five steals and one assist. Ashland received two goals and five assists from Erik Oline and Michael Loop had two goals and one assist.
Grizzly goalie Vincent Wright made 11 blocks and had three steals.
Girls Water Polo
ASHLAND 12, MADRAS 11, OT: At Corvallis, Amelia Covert Zeve scored seven goals to lead Ashland to the state playoff victory Thursday.
The Grizzlies advance to the state championships and will play Mountain View in the semifinals at 3:40 p.m. Friday.
Fiona Johnson added three goals for Ashland and teammate Zee Harrison provided two goals, three assists and two steals.
Izzy Nicolier came up with 10 blocks in net for the Grizzlies.
