Bennion lifts St. Mary’s to first win

YREKA — St. Mary’s freshman guard Emma Bennion stepped up in a big way Saturday and her Crusader teammates followed suit to earn their first girls basketball victory of the season, 42-25 over Weed in the 61st annual Yreka Invitational.

Bennion scored a career-high 18 points and St. Mary’s (1-2) broke open the contest with a 14-3 surge in the third quarter to win going away.

St. Mary’s got six points apiece from senior Sabrina Miller and freshman Maddie Wheelock, and freshman Ibixia Alvarez scored five points.

Weed was led by junior post Rachel Michelon, who had 13 points.

SIUSLAW 45, PHOENIX 31: At Phoenix, Kaylene Ritter tossed in a game-high 20 points to go with five rebounds and three steals in a losing effort for Phoenix.

After leading 10-4 at the end of the first quarter, the Pirates (0-2) went cold from the field and got outscored 26-12 over the next two periods.

Alexis DeLaTorre grabbed 10 rebounds and Bella Lopez dished out seven assists for Phoenix.

EL SOBRANTE (Calif.) 48, BUTTE FALLS 40: At Canyonville, Butte Falls junior guard Katie Munsell had 11 points, six rebounds and five steals in the Canyonville Christian Academy Invitational loss and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Raleigh Weaver added 12 points and seven rebounds and Jade Stubbs had eight points for the Loggers (1-1) against the San Francisco-area opponent.

PROSPECT 54, MT. VIEW FROSH 5: At Gilchrist, Prospect got 16 points and eight rebounds from senior Julia Latona and 16 points and 16 rebounds from junior Baley Van Wormer in the Gilchrist Tournament romp.

Marissa Raines added 10 points for Prospect (1-2), which used its zone defense to thwart the Mountain View freshmen.

RV ADVENTIST 38, ESCONDIDO ACADEMY 32: At Angwin, Calif., junior post Rose Tovar scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Rogue Valley Adventist rallied for the victory in the third-place game of the Pioneers Classic at Pacific Union College.

The Red Tail Hawks (2-1) trailed by one point entering the final period, then used tight defensive pressure to outscore the California school 12-5 in the fourth.

Senior point guard Ashton Petray had eight points and three assists and Carli Zamora pulled down nine rebounds to go with five points for RVA.
