St. Mary’s boys rally to defeat North Valley

MERLIN — After winning the Yreka Tournament last weekend for its third straight win to open the season, the St. Mary’s boys’ unbeaten record looked in jeopardy against Class 4A North Valley on Tuesday.

The 3A Crusaders trailed by six points entering the final period, then found their shooting touch and upped the defensive intensity to rally for a 44-39 road victory over the Knights in nonconference basketball Tuesday.

Senior forward Connor Vinyard led the Crusaders’ fourth-quarter comeback by scoring eight of his game-high 18 points. Vinyard also contributed 12 rebounds.

“Connor hit some late-game shots that were the difference,” said St. Mary’s coach Greg Conway. “Despite missing some early shots, he stepped up big time and shot unbelievably confident in the fourth quarter.”

The Crusaders (4-0) trailed 31-25 entering the fourth but Vinyard’s two 3-pointers and two free throws helped St. Mary’s outscore the Knights 19-8 down the stretch.

Michael Crennen, St. Mary’s senior post, added 11 points and 15 rebounds, and teammate Hunter Rothfus came up with five rebounds and five steals.

Senior wing Elias Stegemiller scored 17 points to pace North Valley (1-2).

“We gutted it out and played lockdown defense in the fourth quarter,” said Conway.
