Panthers rally for win in Hawaii tourney

HONOLULU, Hawaii — WIth a perfectly timed shot block, Lauren Orndoff helped the South Medford girls basketball team preserve a 44-41 victory over Punahou following a furious rally in the opening round of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic at ‘Iolani School on Thursday.

The win vaulted the Panthers (2-0) into today’s semifinals against defending Hawaiian state champion Konawaena High School at 8:30 p.m. PST.

Orndoff dropped in 12 points for the Panthers, who shot just 33 percent but held Punahou to just three points in the fourth quarter. Punahou had a 38-32 lead heading into the final period.

Julissa Tago went 5 of 7 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her 11 points.

Hannah Washington amassed 19 rebounds to go with her eight points despite facing foul trouble throughout the second half.

South Medford outrebounded Punahou, 36-27.

CRATER 55, HENLEY 38: At Central Point, sophomore Aleesa Yother hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter to spark Crater in the Crater Invitational game.

Yother’s burst helped the Comets (1-1) take a 10-4 lead after one. She finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Destiny Fahndrich had 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three assists and no turnovers for Crater. Cheyenne Scott had 11 points, six assists and three steals and Mallory Heard eight points and eight rebounds.

CRATER 51, MAZAMA 48, OT: At Central Point, Tanner Mallams scored five of Crater’s seven overtime points, including a 3-pointer, as the Comets won in the first round of their tournament.

A three-point play by Robbie Henderson gave Crater (1-2) a three-point lead late in regulation, but Mazama returned the favor at the other end.

Kiefer Edwards had 18 points and five rebounds for the Comets, and Henderson scored 11 and had four assists.

The 5A Eagles (2-0) led 48-11 at halftime over 3A Illinois Valley. Quintero scored 26, Scott 24 and Mario Reyes-Serna 16.

Trent Jensen, a 6-foot-4 senior post, scored 15 for the Cougars (1-4).
