With three champs, Crater takes fifth

NORTH BEND — Crater crowned three wrestling champions in Logan Meek, Tommy Winningham and Cavin Gillispie and finished fifth overall in the team competition to highlight the local contingent at the 35-team Army Strong Coast Classic on Saturday.

Meek was a 6-3 winner over Henley’s Daine Taylor at 152 pounds to give the Comets a boost in the championship round, then Winningham won by a 13-2 major decision over Canby’s Zane Rise at 182 and Gillispie pinned Roseburg’s Cameron Campbell in 3 minutes, 35 seconds at 195.

Meek scored three falls in his four tournament wins, while Gillispie won by fall in all four of his matches.

With sophomore Zeth Brower placing fourth overall at 106, the Comets totaled 160.5 points to finish well off the pace set by tournament champion Roseburg (261 points). Brower lost a 6-3 decision to Marshfield’s Cole Smith in the semifinals and then was a hard-luck loser in sudden victory in the third-place final against Roseburg’s Hunter Sparks, 8-6.

Crook County finished second at 213 points, followed by Marshfield (174.5) and Redmond (173.5).

North Medford placed ninth with 116 team points and was led by senior Henry Cox, who advanced to the 120 championship but came up short in a 7-2 decision to Hood River Valley’s Noah Wachsmuth.

Also placing for the Black Tornado were Luke Mackey (fifth at 145), Cole Hornbrook (fifth at 152) and Louis Dix (sixth at 160).
