Comets strong in dual victory

CENTRAL POINT — Just five days ago at the Army Strong Coast Classic, there were only eight points and two places that separated the Crater wrestling squad from Henley when the team standings were finalized.

When the two went head-to-head in their nonconference dual Wednesday, the Comets flexed their muscles with a convincing 48-21 victory over the Hornets at Crater High School.

“They’re a good, solid team,” said Comets coach Greg Haga. “But our kids came out pretty aggressive and pretty heavy handed, and they really took care of business.”

In one of the best matches of the afternoon, Crater’s Logan Meek, who moved from the 152-pound weight class to 160, recovered from a three-point deficit to take down Henley’s Austin Tillery, 11-10.

Also bumping up a weight class for the Comets at 170 was Jace Godley, who pinned Christian Perez.

Other Crater victors were Zeth Brower, Hunter Grant, Tommy Winningham, Cavin Gillispie, James Pendleton and Javon Gill.

NORTH MEDFORD 45, EAGLE POINT 27: At Eagle Point, North Medford got quick pins from Cole Hornbrook, Chase Mitchell, Henry Cox and Dominic Deitrick to lead the way in their dual with Eagle Point.

In one of the best matchups of the afternoon, Eagle Point’s Thomas Zomerdyk pinned North Medford’s Tanner Ulrey in 2 minutes, 40 seconds in their 113-pound match.

ST. MARY’S 56, PHOENIX 24: Michael Crennen recorded a double-double and Connor Vinyard filled the stat sheets for undefeated St. Mary’s.

Crennen had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Vinyard chalked up eight points, 10 boards, four assists and three blocks.

Kele Eaton scored all 10 of his points in the first half to get the Crusaders (6-0) going and Hunter Rothfus added 12 points.

The Pirates (1-5) were led by Drake Knowles’ 11 points.

Girls Basketball

NORTH MEDFORD 53, MAZAMA 49: Rylee Karrick and Maggie Freeman scored 15 points apiece and North Medford made 15 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter to fend off Mazama.

Freeman made two quick buckets to open the fourth quarter and help the Black Tornado (5-0) secure an edge for the rest of the period, forcing the Vikings to foul with around three minutes remaining.

Savannah Bumgardner had eight points and eight rebounds for North Medford, which got four points, 10 rebounds and three steals from Megan Fossen.

The Vikings’ Amber Lease poured in 19 points.

Freshman guard Ibixica Alvarez added 16 points for the Crusaders (3-3).

Phoenix’s Kaylene Ritter scored 11 points and Bella Lopez added 10.
