Comets shine at GP Winter Kickoff

GRANTS PASS — The Crater wrestling team on Friday advanced six into today's semifinals of the 36-team Grants Pass Winter Kickoff at Grants Pass High.

Eagle Point has three wrestlers in the semifinals and Phoenix two.

Marshfield leads with 113 points, followed by Henley (108), Grants Pass (105) and the Comets (104.5). The Eagles are eighth (57) and the Pirates 12th (44).

At 106 pounds, Crater’s Zeth Brower won by technical fall in 5 minutes, 38 seconds (23-7) against Henley’s Brock Bresser in the quarterfinals.

Brower’s semifinal opponent will be North Medford’s Tanner Ulrey, who earned a 13-7 decision versus Grants Pass’ Barrett Titus in their quarterfinal match.

At 113, Crater’s Hunter Grant beat Timothy Coblentz of Stayton, 4-3, in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals, where he’ll take on Henley’s Michael Bresser.

At 138, Eagle Point’s Michael Hammond pinned Tim Reed of Modoc in 5:02 in the quarterfinals. Hammond will face Eureka’s Brady Maples in the semifinals.

Crater’s Logan Meek pinned Cottage Grove’s Gage Herbert in 32 seconds in their 152-pound quarterfinal. Meek will take on Davin Nichols of Mazama in the semifinals. Also at 152, Eagle Point’s Bryan O’Neil won by fall in 21 seconds over Joe Rasmussen of Sweet Home in the quarterfinals. O’Neil will face Henley’s Daine Taylor in the semifinals.

Tommy Winningham of Crater pinned Anderson’s Ryan McKibben in 3:39 in their 182-pound quarterfinal bout. Winningham will wrestle against Mazama’s Josh Hammers in the semifinals. Also at 182, Phoenix’s Justin Knight picked up a 10-5 decision over Glendale’s Brian Corbett in the quarterfinals, setting up a semifinal meeting with Dayton’s Andres Gonzalez.

At 195, Crater’s Cavin Gillispie won by fall in 4:48 over Marshfield’s Joey Vigue in the quarterfinals. Gillispie will next take on Eagle Point’s Joseph Garcia, who topped Anderson’s Jesse Williamson, 6-5.

At 220, Phoenix’s Trace Vega pinned Del Norte’s Tanner Gensaw in 51 seconds in their quarterfinal, setting up a semifinal matchup with Crater’s Wally Pendleton. Pendleton won by fall in 2:55 over Hidden Valley’s Jonathan LaCombe.

In 285-pound quarterfinal action, Cascade Christian’s Moses Jackson pinned Del Norte’s Garret McAlexander in 42 seconds. Jackson will next face Cottage Grove’s Adam Lamb.

TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: At Reno, Nev., North Medford's Cole Hornbrook advanced to the 160-pound quarterfinals.

Hornbrook won all four of his matches by fall.

Swimming

NEWPORT INVITATIONAL: At Newport, Phoenix’s Alec Sheperd won the 200-yard freestyle race in 1 minute, 59.8 seconds and Ethan Shepherd was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.12) during the eight-team meet.

Phoenix’s Lauren Speaks was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.86).

Alec Shepherd earned second in the 500 freestyle (5:29.94) and Ethan Shepherd placed second in the 100 freestyle (51.95) for the Pirates, who finished third on the boys side with 206 points and fifth on the girls side (126).

The Newport boys won the team title (279) and the North Bend girls were victorious (386).

Hockey

NORTH MEDFORD 10, SOUTH MEDFORD 6: Josh Wu scored five goals and Chase Courtney provided a hat trick and four assists for North Medford, which earned its second victory over South Medford this season at The RRRink.

Wu also had two assists and Brenden Nordstrom rounded out the scoring for the Black Tornado with a pair of goals.

Black Tornado goalkeeper Evan Riggs logged 29 saves.

Jayden Lewis contributed two goals and a couple of assists for the Panthers (0-3).
