Scott sparks Crater to tourney win

Cheyenne Scott came up big for the Crater Comets in the girls semifinals of the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic.

The senior point guard orchestrated the Comets attack and led the team in scoring as Crater rolled past Santiam Christian, 44-22, Tuesday at Cascade Christian High.

Defending tournament champion Crater (5-2) will play Eagle Point in today’s final at 6 p.m.

The Comets had a season-low six turnovers and forced 17 by the Eagles (4-3)..

Scott scored 13 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, two steals and 0 turnovers.

“(Scott) handled the ball well and took good shots,” said Crater coach David Heard.

Destiny Fahndrich, the Comets 5-foot-10 senior forward, posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Crater junior post Evie Kent contributed nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Santiam Christian was held to just three first-half field goals as the Comets held a 20-10 advantage at intermission.

EAGLE POINT 62, HARRISBURG 26: Adrienne Wood scored 19 of her game-high 24 points in the first half as Eagle Point charged into the tournament final.

Wood, a senior guard, had five 3-pointers, including four in the opening two quarters, and dished out five assists.

Casmilla Beal led the Eagles (3-5) with five rebounds.

PHOENIX 46, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 22: Phoenix used hot shooting by Kaylene Ritter and strong defense in the consolation semifinal win.

Ritter scored 23 points, including nine in the first quarter, and made all three of the Pirates’ (2-5) 3-pointers. She and Alexis De La Torre each had 11 rebounds.

Cascade Christian (0-5), which was held to two points in the second quarter and three in the fourth, got eight points from Alyssa Brown.

In a late Monday game, Brown scored 13 points in Cascade Christian's 39-35 opening-round loss to Harrisburg.

NYSSA 42, ST. MARY’S 38: Ibixica Alvarez registered a career-high 13 points for St. Mary’s in the consolation semifinal loss.

St. Mary’s (3-5) led by as many as five points in the third quarter but Nyssa used a balanced attack and the Crusaders hurt themselves with spotty free-throw shooting in the final period. While Nyssa went 5-for-8 from the line in the stanza, St. Mary’s was 2 of 10.

CRATER JV 46, BUTTE FALLS 28: Raleigh Weaver had a big game for Butte Falls, but the turnovers and missed free throws hurt the Loggers.

Weaver had 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots for Butte Falls (3-2). Katie Munsell added nine points, four steals and four assists.

The Loggers were 12 of 27 on free throws and had 21 turnovers.

CRATER 73, MYRTLE POINT 31: Mason Vranes led hot-shooting Crater to the consolation victory.

The Comets (3-5) will face Cascade Christian in the tournament’s fourth-place game at 7:30 tonight.

Crater shot 68 percent from the field and was 9 of 11 on free throws.

Vranes scored a game-high 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. The sophomore guard made four of the Comets' 10 3-pointers.

Crater received 12 points and five rebounds from Keifer Edwards.

Junior guard Mario Quintero paced Eagle Point with 10 points.
