Washington, Panthers top Hermiston

LAKE OSWEGO — The fifth-ranked South Medford girls basketball team passed its first test at the Nike Interstate Shootout at Lake Oswego High on Sunday night.

Head coach Tom Cole expects a much more difficult challenge tonight.

Led by Hannah Washington's 18 points and 12 rebounds, the Panthers defeated Hermiston, 62-56, setting the stage for a quarterfinal date with California powerhouse Miramonte.

The Orinda, Calif., squad is fourth nationally in the USA Today computer rankings and 12th in the newspaper's experts rankings. Miramonte (7-0) is led by Sabrina Ionescu, a five-star 5-foot-10 guard rated third in the country from the class of 2016 by espnW.

The Matadors (7-0) crushed West Linn, 80-38, on Saturday. They square off with South at 8 tonight.

"We are gonna have to be a lot better to even be competitive with Miramonte," Cole said.

Jasmin Falls recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds and Julissa Tago scored 16 points on Sunday against the second-ranked Bulldogs (7-2), who were the Class 5A state runners-up last winter.

Lauren Orndoff chipped in eight points and four steals and Ula Chamberlin five assists and five steals during action in the 16-team Swoosh bracket.

Sara Ramirez had 22 points against the Panthers (6-1), who led 29-24 at halftime.

Reserve Jonnay Foote came up big late, Cole said, knocking down a few free throws and spearheading some defensive plays to help fend off the Bulldogs.

Washington fouled out in the fourth quarter.

"I know we can play a lot better and just gotta focus on getting better," Cole said.
