Churchill holds off Ashland in MWL opener

ASHLAND — Ashland scratched and clawed its way back into the lead after a terrible start but went cold from the perimeter and the free-throw line in a 56-42 loss to Churchill in the Midwestern League boys basketball opener for both teams Friday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Led by 6-foot-4 junior forward Lucas Wilson, the visiting Lancers went on a 12-0 run to turn a 28-24 third-quarter deficit into a 36-28 lead, then hit 16 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter to win going away.

“I’ve addressed this before — we kind of get a little inconsistent offensively,” Ashland head coach Sam Osofsky said. “We’re executing well but we’re just not getting to that secondary, third look that we would hope to get to and I think it kind of bit us tonight. With the defensive effort being there we just didn’t quite have enough stretches offensively.”

The Grizzlies’ shooting struggles were the main culprit. Ashland hit just 5 of 21 3-point attempts and was 7-for-17 at the free-throw line.

Junior guard Malik Pippa had 14 points, four assists and four rebounds for the Grizzlies, who lost for the fifth time in their last six games to fall to 4-7. Walker Shibley had 12 points and four rebounds and McKane Ellis four boards.

Wilson scored all 13 of his points in the second half, including six straight in the third to ignite the Lancers’ game-busting rally. DJ Wright-Becker led Churchill (8-5) with 16 points and Cameron Hall added 13.

Churchill, No. 9 in the 5A media poll, capitalized on Ashland’s shaky start to score the game’s first 12 points and led 18-8 after the first quarter.
