Highlanders race past Eagles

EUGENE — The Eagle Point girls basketball team kept up with sixth-ranked North Eugene for a quarter before the Highlanders pulled away in the Midwestern League opener on Saturday.

Adrienne Wood scored 20 points and hit four 3-pointers for the Eagles in North Eugene’s 60-37 victory.

Ashli Meerten had five points and four rebounds and Carlene Hart added five points for Eagle Point (4-8, 0-1 MWL), which trailed 22-18 after the first quarter.

The Eagles cut it to 22-20 in the second quarter before the Highlanders (12-1, 1-0) went on a 7-0 run. North Eugene outscored Eagle Point, 13-4, to take a 35-22 lead into halftime.

“It’s started out as a really good first quarter and the kids really competed tonight,” Eagle Point head coach Marvin Denman said. “The score won’t show it but we really felt like we competed with them.”

SOUTH EUGENE 41, GRANTS PASS 40: At Eugene, Karly Dinkel and Alyssa Etheridge each had nine points for Grants Pass but an early deficit proved to be the Cavers’ undoing in Southwest Conference play.

Abi Johnson and Jordan Kujawski each added eight points for Grants Pass (5-4, 1-1 SWC), which fell behind 24-14 by halftime and had its comeback effort fall short.

Sydney Bowers had 17 points and Kaelin Stein had 15 for South Eugene (2-10, 1-1).

PHOENIX 56, SOUTH UMPQUA 36: At Winston, Kaylene Ritter scored 22 points, Alexis De La Torre had 13 points and Amanda Orndorff had nine rebounds and seven points to pace Phoenix in the second day of the SkyWest Crossover Tournament at Douglas High.

The Pirates (6-7) forced nine first-quarter turnovers and opened a 32-19 lead by halftime over South Umpqua (1-11).

Meg Vasey added nine points for the Crusaders (7-7), who trailed 26-21 at halftime against the Eagles (7-5).

Savannah Breiholz added eight points for the Cougars (5-8, 0-4 MVL), who trailed 24-12 at halftime against Triad (6-5, 2-1).

RV ADVENTIST 35, CENTRAL CHRISTIAN 9: At Redmond, Savannah Zamora had 11 points for Rogue Valley Adventist during Mountain Valley League action.

Ashton Petray added eight points for the Red Tail Hawks (9-3, 3-1 MVL). Central Christian dropped to 0-7, 0-4 in league.
