North Medford earns sweep in SWC meet

North Medford had no trouble with Willamette and then came through with a shining effort against Thurston to sweep the Black Tornado’s part of a four-way Southwest Conference wrestling meet Tuesday night at North Medford High.

North Medford won three of the four matches wrestled against Willamette by fall, with heavyweight Julian Stone adding a 2-1 decision in the 81-0 victory. Anthony Neuenschwander (126 pounds), Louis Dix (162) and Jonathinn Casaday (220) earned pins in the forfeit-heavy dual against the Wolverines.

The action was more intense against Thurston but the Black Tornado still stood tall in gaining a 56-16 triumph thanks to seven pins.

“It was a good dual, Thurston’s a pretty good team but it was just our night,” said North Medford head coach Phillip Lopez. “We wrestled pretty good, probably as well as we have all year.”

Defending state champion Wyatt Westfall returned to action after a long layoff due to injury and secured a 10-5 victory at 182 pounds against Thurston’s Chris Sacrison for one of North Medford’s highlight victories.

Other key wins by the Black Tornado included a pin at 113 by Tanner Ulrey over Max Corzine in 3 minutes, 40 seconds and a 5-4 decision by Joshua Robbins over Jackson Casteel at 195.

“Josh wrestled smart and in a zone and pulled out a big victory and I’m pretty excited for him,” added Lopez. “He just didn’t make a mistake. He didn’t put anything in danger and capitalized when he had a chance to score in the end.”

Robbins led 3-2 when he was hit with a stalling point to tie the match, then scored a takedown with seven seconds to go to help clinch the victory.

North Medford will next compete in the Oregon Classic in Redmond on Saturday. The Black Tornado is seeded fourth for the event, behind only Roseburg, David Douglas and Newberg.

Tuesday’s SWC meet also saw Thurston top South Medford, 60-18, before the Panthers scored a 54-15 win over Willamette.
