Schireman, Tornado pull away for victory

SPRINGFIELD — Senior guard Brian Schireman had 28 points, five assists and four rebounds to pace the North Medford boys basketball team in its 64-53 victory over Thurston during Southwest Conference action on Friday night.

Tyren Wolfe went for 10 points, Brad Allen eight points and six rebounds, Kaison Faust five points and seven rebounds and Tre Holmes four points, four rebounds and four assists for the Black Tornado, which led 22-12 after the first quarter.

The Colts made things interesting in the second quarter, taking the lead momentarily before North regained its advantage to enter halftime ahead, 35-33.

The Black Tornado, ranked No. 9 in the 6A media poll, used a 19-9 run in the third to create some separation.

North next hosts crosstown rival South Medford at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

CHURCHILL 69, CRATER 40: At Eugene, Kiefer Edwards had a hot shooting night and finished with a game-high 25 points for Crater in the MWL road loss.

Edwards, a sophomore forward, was 9 of 10 from the field and 4 of 5 on free throws.

Churchill (10-5, 3-0 MWL) shot 66 percent from the field and outrebounded the Comets (3-11, 0-3), 24-12.

The Grizzlies (5-8, 1-2 MWL) were held to one field goal in the fourth quarter against Springfield (9-5, 2-0).

HENLEY 57, PHOENIX 44: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix battled back from a 19-point halftime deficit to within six with four minutes to play before Henley closed out the Skyline win.

Thomas Skaff had 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Pirates (3-12, 0-2 Sky). Cole George added nine points.

Tyler West scored 11 points and Kele Eaton added seven points and seven rebounds for the Crusaders (10-5, 1-0 SCL), who led 33-26 at halftime against Lakeview (8-9, 1-1).

Vinyard had 22 of his points in the first half for St. Mary's, which saw Crennen make his return after missing several games with an injury.
