Host Eagles claim Invitational title

EAGLE POINT — Eagle Point secured four wrestling titles among its 10 finalists to win going away in the Eagle Point Invitational on Saturday.

Leading the charge for the host Eagles were champions Thomas Zomerdyk (106 pounds), Chance McMullin (113), Scott Martin (182) and Taylor Lawler (220). Placing second were Bradey Thrash (106), Michael Hammond (132), Conor Gaines (138), Bryan O’Neil (152), Gage Graves (170) and Joseph Garcia (182).

“We had some tight matches that could’ve gone our way, even in the finals, but there was improvement in our team and I’m excited about that,” said Eagle Point head coach Kacey McNulty. “We’ve had marked improvement in the last two weeks so that’s been good.”

On Wednesday, the Eagles will get another chance to step up when they host Crater in a Midwestern League dual at 7 p.m. The Comets placed fourth in the Oregon Classic on Saturday in Redmond.

Eagle Point scored 318 points to outdistance runner-up Phoenix, which had 235. South Medford (140), Del Norte (134) and Brookings-Harbor (114) rounded out the top five teams.

Phoenix’s Cedar King (138), Jessi Daniels (145) and Trace Vega (195) each won their weight class, while Zach Atteberry (126) and Garrett Truex (160) placed second.

Cascade Christian authored a solid showing as Gunnar Thompson (126) and Moses Jackson (285) each placed first and Max Valle was second at 120.

South Medford’s Cody Grossman finished runner-up at 113.

OREGON CLASSIC: At Redmond, Crater earned a fourth-place trophy in the Class 5A dual-meet tournament and North Medford fell just outside the top four in the 6A tourney.

Crater heavyweight Javon Gill clinched a 41-32 win over Sandy in the 5A quarterfinals with a pin at 3:44 over Iosefa Polamalu, but the Comets lost 51-18 to Hermiston in the semifinals and 51-17 to Redmond in the third-place final.

Zeth Brower was the lone Comet to pick up three wins on Day 2, earning pins at 106 pounds over Sandy’s Dylan Miller (3:02) and Hermiston’s Daylon Eng (53 seconds) to go with a 13-3 major decision over Redmond’s Trae Bolken.

Tommy Winningham (170) won his only two matches, 14-6 over Sandy’s Abe Mitchell and 5-1 over Hermiston’s Brock McDonough before sitting out the Redmond dual. Crater, which was finished second in its Day 1 pool, rested a handful of wrestlers in the final two duals.

Hermiston won the 5A title over Hillsboro.

North Medford suffered a 43-27 loss to Newberg in the quarterfinals but rebounded to beat Barlow 55-21. Dominic Deitrick (126), Luke Mackey (145), Louis Dix (152), Cole Hornbrook (170) and Wyatt Westfall (182) each won both of their matches Saturday.

Roseburg beat David Douglas for the 6A title and Newbert topped Sprague in the third-place final.

Swimming

SOUTH BOYS, ASHLAND GIRLS PREVAIL: South Medford’s boys team swept Ashland, Crater and St. Mary’s to earn an overall victory and Ashland’s girls topped St. Mary’s, South Medford and Crater to do likewise in a meet at the Rogue Valley YMCA.

South Medford’s John Henry Gaffney won the 50 free (24.07 seconds) and 100 free (53.75) and was part of winning relay efforts by the Panther boys in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Hunter Oliver won the 100 fly (1:12.07) and 100 back (1:10.83) for Ashland’s boys team.

Ruby Weaver and Julia Miller each won two individual events for the South Medford girls, with Weaver taking the 200 free (2:32.88) and 100 fly (1:23.75) and Miller winning the 100 free (1:02.39) and 100 back (1:09.31).

ALL-SKYLINE MEET: At Grants Pass, Phoenix’s boys team won the All-Skyline Conference meet for the 15th straight year and the Pirate girls placed second in an effort that included a new meet record for each squad at the Grants Pass YMCA.

The Phoenix boys set a new meet record by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:52.28. The foursome of Bryce Roy, Thomas Ward, Eddie Stewart and Ethan Shepherd broke the old record of 1:52.97 set in 2000.

Stewart and Shepherd were also dual winners in individual events.

Lauren Speaks topped her own meet record of 1:12.95 set last year in the 100 breast by cruising into first place in 1:12.79. Teammate Emily Samudio took first in the 100 fly (1:07.04) and 500 free (6:05.99).
