RV Adventist claims fourth place at state

BAKER CITY — Ashton Petray had eight points and six rebounds and Rose Tovar recorded six points, eight rebounds and three steals as the second-seeded Rogue Valley Adventist girls basketball team beat No. 5 Adrian, 24-19, to capture fourth place at the Class 1A state tournament at Baker High on Friday.

The Red Tail Hawks went 2-1 in their first-ever appearance at the tournament, capping a season that included the Mountain Valley League championship.

“It feels great,” Rogue Valley Adventist girls head coach Marlene Slagle said. “The girls made history. These girls are the first from our school to make it out of districts, then to win it, beat Chiloquin three times in a row, beat Hosanna Christian three times in a row and to come to state? It’s pretty exciting.”

Tovar was named player of the game for RVA, which trailed 3-2 after the first quarter before taking an 11-7 lead by halftime.

Hannah Wood added five points for the Red Tail Hawks (25-4), whose strong defense shined on Friday and throughout the season, Slagle said.

The Antelopes (21-7) shot just 8 of 58 from the floor but outrebounded RVA, 39-27.

“The girls played amazing defense,” Slagle said. “It’s been a team effort all year.”

The Hawks, with a limited bench, used just five players in their triumph. They were in the same boat in their victory over Condon/Wheeler on Thursday.

“They stuck with it,” Slagle said. “They just kept pushing and pushing. I’m proud of them.”
