Tornado opens with softball victory

North Medford collected 14 hits over five innings and upended McNary, 15-5 in five innings, in a nonleague softball season opener Wednesday at U.S. Cellular.

McNary, eliminated the Black Tornado in the first round of the state playoffs last season, scored three runs in the top of the first inning. After that, it was all Black Tornado.

Tralene Kucera hit a solo home run during a six-run first inning for North. McNary got one back in the top of the second, but the Tornado scored four in the bottom of the frame for a 10-4 lead.

Kucera was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Olivia Lethlean, Taelor Mayben and Teanna Gonsalves each had three hits. Gonsalves scored three times, Lethlean twice and Mayben drove in two.

Winning pitcher Sarah Thomas allowed five runs — three earned — on nine hits, striking out four and walking one.

NORTH VALLEY 25, ASHLAND 9, 5 inn.: At Ashland, North Valley exploded for 12 runs in the third inning during nonleague action.

Julia Senestraro went 2-for-4 and scored twice, Adrianna Bohn was 2-for-4 and Jennifer O’Connor 2-for-3 for Ashland.

YREKA 5, EAGLE POINT 4: At Yreka, Calif., Yreka scored a run with one out in the bottom of the seventh for the nonleague win.

Dylan Marsh was 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice for the Eagles (0-1), and Charles Little went 2-for-3.

Boys Golf

MARIST INVITATIONAL: At Blue River, Mike Piazzini of Crater tied for fourth place at the Marist Invitational at Tokatee Golf Club.

Piazzini shot a 79 for the Comets, who were last among five teams with a score of 380.

Davis received help from Ben Quast (75) as the Challengers finished with a team score of 314 to stave off runner-up St. Mary’s.

The Crusaders shot 337 as a team with Jeremy Wu’s 73 leading the way and Josh Wu providing a 76.

Lakeview’s Tate Lightle shot a 70 to earn medalist honors.

EAGLE POINT MATCH PLAY: At Eagle Point, Danielle Giles carded a 7-over-par 79 for Crater, which won all five of its match play events at Eagle Point Golf Club.

Falon Sonnen shot a 97 and Caitlyn O’Connor added a 103 for the Comets.

Eagle Point was led by Ryleigh Gainey’s 101.

CENTENNIAL TOURNAMENT: Kiana Oshira, Crater’s lone representative, turned in a 2-under-par 70 while St. Mary’s won the tournament at Centennial Golf Club.

Kaylee Wu penciled in an 80 and Kamryn Ford added an 81 for the Crusaders, who were the only school to provide a complete team and claimed the event with a score of 463.

ST. MARY’S 8, HIDDEN VALLEY 0: At Grants Pass, St. Mary’s top seed Pratheev Weerakoon won unscathed in both singles and doubles for the Crusaders against Hidden Valley, a first-year program.

Weerakoon defeated the Mustangs’ Rafael Morata, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Ian Newton to beat Cameron MacDonald and Jake McCafferty, 6-0, 6-0.

Track & Field

MEDFORD TWILIGHT MEET: Guided by Madeline Volk, Marissa Dobry and Maddie Wheelock, St. Mary’s faired well with six individual winners at the Medford Twilight meet at Spiegelberg Stadium.

Volk won the 800, Dobry the 1,500 and Wheelock grabbed the win in the high jump. All three represented a leg of the winning 4x4 relay team that also included Meg Vasey.

On the boys side, Mark Wyant finished first in the 400 and Josh Martin was tops in the shot put.
