Tornado opens with softball victory

North Medford collected 14 hits over five innings and upended McNary, 15-5 in five innings, in a nonleague softball season opener Wednesday at U.S. Cellular.

Tralene Kucera hit a solo home run during a six-run first inning for North. McNary got one back in the top of the second, but the Tornado scored four in the bottom of the frame for a 10-4 lead.

Kucera was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Olivia Lethlean, Taelor Mayben and Teanna Gonsalves each had three hits. Gonsalves scored three times, Lethlean twice and Mayben drove in two.

Winning pitcher Sarah Thomas allowed five runs — three earned — on nine hits, striking out four and walking one.
