Washington sets South record as North sweeps

Josh Washington stole the show for the South Medford track and field team but it was North Medford’s overall depth that won out in the end in Southwest Conference action Wednesday at South Medford High.

Washington broke the school record for South Medford in the high jump when he cleared 6 feet, 7½ inches to highlight the day for the Panther boys, who lost 82-62 in the team meet. The previous record of 6-7 was shared by Colin Grant, Ethan Wallenberg and Josh Milhollin.

“Josh is a very competitive young man and always gets fired up to compete and he competed well today,” said South Medford head coach Tim Rupp. “I know he wanted to get that record early in the season so I’m happy for him.”

North Medford senior sprinter Tyren Wolfe was similarly impressive in winning the 100-meter dash in 10.75 seconds (just off his state championship time last year) and the 200 in 22.09, which is better than his time in last year’s state prelims. Wolfe was also part of North’s winning short and long relay teams.

The Black Tornado boys also recorded two event victories by Brian Schireman (high and intermediate hurdles) and Tre Holmes (shot put and discus).

In the girls meet, won 90-51 by the Tornado, North Medford senior Savannah Greenwade won the 200 (27.39) and 400 (1:01.08) and was part of two triumphant relay teams. Teammate Anna Lorenz won in the 100 hurdles (17.33) and javelin (114 feet, 5 inches).

South Medford sophomore Jazmin Duncan won the 1,500 and 3,000, while teammates Sara Miles (shot put and discus) and Logan Billy (high jump and triple jump) also won two individual events.
