Wu golfers dominate at Roseburg invite

ROSEBURG — There wasn’t just one Wu topping the leaderboards at the Roseburg Invitational on Friday, but three — and one Ford.

Brothers Jeremy and Josh Wu tied for medalist honors to lead the St. Mary’s boys to a three-stroke victory over Grants Pass, while sister Kaylee Wu captured co-medalist honors with teammate Kamryn Ford to win it for the Crusader girls at Roseburg Country Club.

Jeremy and Josh Wu carded 2-over-par 74s as St. Mary’s scored a 324 as a team, edging out the Cavemen (327).

Grants Pass got a 79 from Tanner Smith and an 80 from Jackson Bartow.

South Medford, which claimed eighth out of 13 teams with a 355, was led by Reese Fisher’s 77, the sixth lowest round of the field. Crater’s Mike Piazzini scored a 76, the third best round of the afternoon. Crater took 11th place.

For the girls, Wu and Ford recorded 85s with fellow Crusader Staesha Flock penciling in an 87 for fourth individually.

The Crusaders scored a 354 as a squad and Grants Pass took second place with a 377.

The Cavers were paced by Sarah Skokan’s 89 and Crater, which took sixth of eight teams, scored a 514.

CHALLENGERS SHINE: At Bandon, Cascade Christian got wins from all its players in a match-play event at Bandon Trails Golf Course Thursday.

The Challengers teamed with Snohomish, Wash., and Coquille in winning 11.5 to 4.5 over players from St. Mary's, Bandon and Oakridge.

Winners for Cascade Christian were Max Davis, Nash O'Hara, Ben Quast, Max Valle and Ryan Collom.

Jeremy Wu posted St. Mary's lone victory.


GLIDE 6, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2: At Glide, Declan Payne and Cade Wager were perfect from the plate but Cascade Christian wasn’t able to string enough hits together to overtake Glide.

Payne finished 3-for-3 and Wager went 2-for-2, and both drove in a run apiece for the Challengers (0-9), who outhit Glide, 8-4.

Girls Tennis

ROSEBURG TOURNAMENT: At Roseburg, South Medford was nearly flawless on the day, dispatching Sheldon 8-0 and Bend, 6-2.

Kelsey Bartlett, the Panthers’ top-seeded singles player, beat Emma Piazza of Sheldon, 6-2, 6-3, while Abi Borg and Anna Johnson combined in doubles to take down Emily Wanicheck and Peyton Ritchie, 6-2, 6-0.

Kali Curtis, South’s No. 2 single, had a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sheldon’s Amanda Hennon and beat Bend’s Susie Garcia, 7-5, 6-2.

St. Mary’s No. 1 single Pratheev Weerakoon earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
