Crater's Jordan Monroe sixth in elite mile

BEAVERTON — Jordan Monroe finished sixth in the elite mile for the Crater girls track team at the 63-team Nike Jesuit Twilight Invitational at Jesuit High School on Friday.

Monroe finished her mile in 5 minutes, 2.29 seconds, while St. Mary’s Marissa Dobry took 12th (5:07.91).

For the boys in the elite mile, Crater’s Walter Vail grabbed ninth, clocking 4:12.98, and Andy Jordan set a Crater sophomore record with a 4:16.5 time, placing 12th.

Michael Slagowski, from Rocky Mountain in Idaho, became the ninth high school runner to break the 4-minute mile mark. His time was 3:59.53.

YREKA LIONS INVITATIONAL: At Yreka, both St. Mary’s girls relay teams snagged first place on the opening day of the 25-team Yreka Lions Invitational.

Megan Michaels, Maddie Wheelock, Sarah Thisted and Aessa Catt teamed for the 4x100-meter victory in 51.62 seconds, and the 4x400 squad of Michaels, Catt, Wheelock and Emma Bennion won in 4:14.59.

Thisted was runner-up in the 100 in 13.34, and Madeline Volk took fifth in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.

For Cascade Christian, Abbey Alexander won the discus with a toss of 108 feet.

On the boys side, St. Mary’s Justin Silsbee, Mark Wyant, Stephen Pugsley and Austin Pena were third in the 4x100 relay in 45.94.

In the shot put, Cascade Christian’s Carson Cochran was fourth (45-7½) and St. Mary’s Thomas Cox fifth (44-3), both season PRs.

Baseball

GRANTS PASS 11-12, THURSTON 1-5: At Grants Pass, Easton Bents erupted with three home runs as Grants Pass swept Thurston in Southwest Conference action.

Two Bents home runs — one a grand slam — came during a 10-run fifth inning by the Cavemen (9-10, 5-10 SWC) in Game 2. Cody Ekwall also provided a three-run homer in the frame.

Bents was 2-for-4 with seven RBIs while Vincent Zavolta went 4-for-4 with two runs.

In the opener, Ekwall threw a two-hitter and Bents went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs.

Zavolta was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Anthony Del Toro scored three times, as did Logan Zozaya and Tyler Rund, and finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Softball

MARIST 8-14, EAGLE POINT 7-3: At Eugene, Paige Leeper’s monster twin bill for Eagle Point was overshadowed by Marist’s walk-off single in Game 1 and Lauren Burke’s four-home run game in the nightcap as the Spartans earned the Midwestern League sweep.

In a game with seven lead changes, Marist’s McKenna Williams hit a two-out, two-strike single to left field to win the opener in the eighth inning.

Leeper went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs for the Eagles (9-9, 7-5 MWL).

In Game 2, Burke went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and five runs for the Spartans, who hit six homers in the six-inning game.

Leeper went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Girls Tennis

BEND TOURNAMENT: At Bend, Ashland’s No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Kaufman and Soleil Heller earned the Grizzlies’ lone victory in two matches on the first day of the Bend Tournament.

Kaufman and Heller beat Crescent Valley’s Megan Alder and Sarah Huang, 8-6.
