Munson selected as North Medford coach
Malcolm Munson has been named North Medford's head volleyball coach, Principal Dan Smith announced Friday.
Munson, who replaces Erika Wright, met with the players Thursday after school, Smith said.
Munson joined North Medford in 2001 and has been involved in coaching volleyball at North Medford, the Rogue Valley Volleyball Club, Ocean Volleyball Club and Hedrick Middle School.
Munson was the head coach at Mazama and Klamath Union high schools in the 1990s, earning coach of the year honors at both schools. He was co-founder of the Klamath Basin Volleyball Club, Smith said.
"We are grateful to have someone with his knowledge and experience taking over this program," Smith said.
Munson teaches at Central Medford High School.
Wright resigned in March after seven years as head coach. Prior to that, she was an assistant to Ron Beick from 2001-08.
Under Wright, North Medford had conference finishes of second in 2011 and 2012 and third in 2013. Last fall, the team went 12-14 overall and 7-7 in the Southwest Conference, losing to West Linn in the first round of the state playoffs.
In six of Wright's seven years, the Black Tornado earned academic all-state honors, finishing No. 1 once.
