St. Mary’s girls take big district golf lead

St. Mary’s had three players break 80 and grabbed the first-round lead of the two-day Class 4A/3A/2A District 4 tournament at Centennial Golf Club Thursday.

Kamryn Ford of St. Mary’s shot the low round of 78 on the par-72 layout to lead the field. The Crusaders also got 79s from Kaylee Wu and Staesha Flock.

The Crusaders scored 347 to take a big lead against four other schools with complete teams. Phoenix is fourth at 487.

The top two teams and five individuals advance to the state tournament.

DISTRICT 4 TOURNAMENT: St. Mary’s took a one-stroke lead over defending state champion Cascade Christian during the first day of the 36-hole 3A/2A/1A regional at Centennial Golf Club.

Josh Wu of St. Mary’s fired the day’s low round of 71 to help the Crusaders, last year’s state runner-up, score a 318.

GRANTS PASS 5, ASHLAND 3: At Grants Pass, Ashland pulled out two three-set barnburners but lost the team battle in the nonleague match.

Ashland No. 4 singles player Anmol Gagneja overcame a first-set loss to defeat Alyssa Jesse, 4-6, 6-0, 10-8.

In the No. 4 doubles match, Ashland’s Molly Bloom and JD Miller also earned a comeback victory, beating Berklee Bennett and Lyndsey Miner, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.

CHURCHILL 9-10, EAGLE POINT 6-4: At Eugene, host Churchill leap-frogged Eagle Point into fourth place in the Midwestern League with the sweep.

In the opener, Ryan Lorenz collected four hits, scored two runs and had one RBI for the Eagles (10-10, 7-8 MWL). Andrew Castro contributed two hits, including a three-run double in the fourth inning that closed the Eagles’ deficit to 4-3.

Trea Perkins added two hits and two RBIs for Eagle Point.

In Game 2, Bennett Rodgers had two hits for Eagle Point.

The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, but Churchill (14-8, 8-7) answered with junior Zach Trivett’s two-out, three-run double.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 24, ASHLAND 15: At Ashland, Ashland’s Jennifer O’Connor smacked a three-run home run in the sixth inning but Illinois Valley took advantage of 10 Grizzly errors in the nonleague win.

The Class 3A Cougars (3-15) broke the game open by scoring 10 runs in a rain-drenched sixth. Mahkayla Sommers led the way for IV with a 5-for-6 performance.

The Grizzlies (2-15) got an emotional lift in the bottom of the sixth when O’Connor delivered the team’s first home run of the year, a line drive over the wall in center.
