Comets stay on top of MWL with split

CENTRAL POINT — The Crater baseball team kept hold of first place in the Midwestern League after splitting with second-place Marist on Saturday.

The Spartans won the opener, 3-0, before the Comets picked up a 12-2 victory in six innings in the nightcap. Crater (16-7, 12-3 MWL) owns a one-game edge in the standings on the Spartans (17-5, 11-4) with three conference contests remaining. The Comets swept the series, 2-1.

In Crater's triumph, Shay Hall and Hayden Deuel both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

In the opener, Neil Bastendorff allowed three unearned runs, two hits and three walks with three strikeouts against Marist.

ASHLAND 4-1, NORTH EUGENE 3-7: At Ashland, Ashland managed a split in the Midwestern League, winning the opener when back-to-back doubles ignited a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

After a leadoff out, Kellar Edwards and Jesse Carroll both doubled, allowing Edwards to score. Three straight walks brought in Carroll to end it.

Ashland's Chris Buckley got the win with three no-hit innings of relief. He fanned three and walked two.

In Game 2, the lone run for Ashland (16-7, 11-7 MWL) came in the sixth on consecutive doubles by Carroll and Nick Sanderson.

GRANTS PASS 14-8, NORTH MEDFORD 6-9: Dallas Casebier submitted a strong performance on the mound and Tate Cowden had the go-ahead RBI double to help host North Medford split the Southwest Conference doubleheader.

With his team trailing 7-0 in the first inning of Game 2, Casebier came on in relief to allow one hit, one unearned run and one walk with four strikeouts in Game 2. The senior did not give up a hit after the opening frame.

The Black Tornado offense did its part in the fifth and sixth, scoring five and four runs respectively. Cowden brought home Berry Hunt and Larson Kindreich and gave North the lead with his double in the sixth. Preston Johnson finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Hunt 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Larson Kindreich 2-for-3 with two runs and Cowden 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.

In the opener, Honus Kindreich was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Tornado (14-9, 11-7 SWC). Drew Bjorn and Anthony Del Toro were 2-for-4 with two runs and Vince Zavolta 2-for-5 with three runs for the Cavemen (10-12, 6-12).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 19-6, ROGUE RIVER 7-2: At Rogue River, Cascade Christian swept the Southern Cascade League doubleheader.

In the opener, Jack West was 3-for-5 with three runs, Trenton Palmer 3-for-5, Cade Wager 2-for-5 with four runs, Chase Wager 2-for-5 with three runs and Joel McLemore 2-for-5 for the Challengers (7-13, 7-3 SCL). Derek Nelson and Jack Dhabolt both went 2-for-3 for Rogue River (1-15, 0-9).

In Game 2, Chase Wager pounded a three-run triple for Cascade Christian and Austin Mahnke finished 2-for-3 for the Chieftains.

PROSPECT 17-8, UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 9-2: At Prospect, Wade May was 7-for-8 with six RBIs and three doubles on the day for Prospect during District 4 play.

In the opener, Roo Driskell went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Spencer Scofield 3-for-4 with a triple and double and Luke McGonagle 2-for-4 for the Cougars (12-2, 11-1 Dist. 4).

In Game 2, Cole Hunsley finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Daniel Pinkerton 2-for-3 and Driskell 2-for-4 against Umpqua Valley Christian (7-16, 5-7). May added four stolen bases.
