Crater defeats South in volleyball

Crater took advantage of Nicole Morse to open things up for the Comets in a season-opening nonconference volleyball victory against South Medford Tuesday.

The Comets defeated the Panthers 20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 at South Medford High.

“They used their best hitter Nicole Morse as a weapon,” said South Medford coach Emily Brink. “Wherever she was they found her.”

Morse, a senior, contributed 13 kills, 13 assists and five digs. The Comets also got a boost from sophomore outside Nehkyah Ellis with 23 kills, eight digs and two aces.

Crater, with three first-time starters in the lineup, began a little tentative, according to coach Leaf Jensen, but came back strong after losing the initial set.

“At the end we turned it on and played great defense,” said Jensen. “That made the difference for us.”

South Medford was paced by junior outside hitter Chanel Groom with seven kills, four blocks and four digs. Junior middle Ashleigh Anderson chipped in five kills, five blocks and two aces. Panthers junior setter Mac Criswell provided 18 assists to go with six digs and three aces.

“We started off really well, we just didn’t finish,” said Brink. “We passed pretty well from the back row but struggled defensively.”

GRANTS PASS 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, Grants Pass used its quickness to post a 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 nonconference win and improve to 4-0 on the season.

Junior rightside Ryleigh Gainey paced Eagle Point with seven kills, eight digs and three aces. Aly Scheffler, a sophomore outside, added five kills, six aces and three blocks. Junior setter Aliah Darling dished out 10 assists to go with seven digs for the Eagles.
