Tornado boys settle for SWC tie

EUGENE — A couple miscues proved costly but North Medford’s boys soccer team was still able to secure a point in Southwest Conference play after gaining a 2-2 tie with Willamette.

The host Wolverines scored both of their goals following misplays by the Black Tornado, one after a bobbled catch by the goalkeeper on a deep throw-in and another after a ricochet into the net on a missed clearance opportunity by the keeper.

Both goals came after North Medford had built a 1-0 lead on a nice setup that was completed by a one-time volley from Caleb Forte off a crisp crossing pass from Heriborto Gallegos in the ninth minute.

The Black Tornado (3-1-1, 2-0-1 SWC) managed to tie the match with about eight minutes to play when Carlos Cordoba drove a 17-yard shot off the goalie’s hand and into the net following an assist by Luis Gallegos.

SHELDON 2, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: At Eugene, South Medford’s Ethan Goldschmidt scored in the 13th minute but the Panthers (0-4-1, 0-3-1 SWC) couldn’t make that hold up as Sheldon tallied the game-winner in the 75th minute.

ST. MARY’S 4, CANYONVILLE CHRISTIAN 0: At Canyonville, St. Mary’s senior Luke Fry scored twice and Ryan Trask made eight saves in the District 5 win.

The Crusaders (6-1, 4-0 Dist. 5) also got goals from Max Lewis and Weston Grant, with assists by Preston Jernigan, Kaleb Webster-Wharton and Pablo Cortez.

ROGUE RIVER 5, PACIFIC 1: At Bandon, Gavin Decker tallied four goals, three coming in the second half, to lead Rogue River to the District 5 victory.

Chieftains goalie Aaron Hansen made seven saves in the first half to help preserve a 2-1 halftime lead.

Sebastian Posten also scored for Rogue River (6-0, 4-0 Dist. 5).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 9, LAKEVIEW 0: Cascade Christian used three goals by Ryan Vidlak and two from Ethan Hoffman to cruise to the District 5 win.

The Challengers improve to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

SHELDON 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: Whitney Winans scored in the seventh minute from 12 yards out on an Ula Chamberlin assist for South Medford during Southwest Conference play.

The Panthers (2-3-1, 2-1-1 SWC) were tied at 1 at halftime against Sheldon (6-0, 4-0).

WILLAMETTE 2, NORTH MEDFORD 0: North Medford was held scoreless for the third time this season in dropping to 0-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in Southwest Conference play.

ASHLAND 1, CORVALLIS 0: At Ashland, Taylor Buckley lead Ashland in a shutout win, recording five saves in the nonleague victory.

In the 13th minute, Olivia West stole the ball just past midfield, took a couple steps and shot a rocket that found the back of the net for the Grizzlies (4-1).

ST. MARY’S 8, ROGUE RIVER 0: Eight different players scored for St. Mary’s in the dominant District 5 win at U.S. Cellular.

Claire Pyka, Sara Klott, Meghan Michels, Adrien Birmingham, Anna Peterson, Grace Weber, Gabi Castillo and Maddie Wheelock all tallied for the Crusaders (4-3, 1-0 Dist. 5).
