Beattie's quick goal sparks Panthers

Liz Beattie got the ball rolling with a goal in the eighth minute as the South Medford girls soccer team topped Grants Pass, 2-1, during Southwest Conference play at South Medford High on Saturday.

Beattie scored from 15 yards out on a Whitney Winans assist.

Chloe Alvarez made it 2-0 Panthers in the 33rd minute after curving in a difficult shot from 12 yards away. Gracie Myers had the assist.

Grants Pass (2-5, 1-4 SWC) drew within a goal in the 60th minute on a McKenzie Masters score, but South Medford (3-3-1, 3-1-1) hung on for the win.

Baylee Smith and Madelyn Pineda turned in strong efforts on defense and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Weber made a big save late in the match.

"We're just trying to make progress every day," South head coach Chris Hollewijn said.

NORTH MEDFORD 1, ROSEBURG 1: At Roseburg, Savannah Bumgardner scored from point-blank range on a Michala Denn assist in the 20th minute for North Medford during Southwest Conference action.

Roseburg (2-5-1, 1-4-1 SWC) evened the score on a free kick in the 75th minute against the Black Tornado (1-3-3, 1-2-2).

SPRINGFIELD 4, CRATER 1: At Central Point, Makiah Palmer's goal in the 69th minute drew Crater to within one before Springfield scored twice late during Midwestern League play.

Palmer tallied from 12 yards out on an Anna Myers assist before the Millers (2-4-1, 1-1 MWL) recorded two goals in the final eight minutes. The match was scoreless at halftime.

The Comets are 2-5-1 overall, 0-1 in league.

ASHLAND 0, CHURCHILL 0: At Eugene, goalkeeper Taylor Buckley-McGinnis recorded the shutout with several difficult saves for Ashland during Midwestern League action.

The Grizzlies moved to 4-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the MWL. Churchill is 1-3-3, 0-0-1 in league.

ST. MARY'S 4, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1: Gabi Castillo recorded a pair of goals for St. Mary's during District 5 play at U.S. Cellular.

Sara Klott and Claire Pyka also scored, Anna Peterson made two assists and Ibixica Alvarez added an assist for the Crusaders (6-3, 3-0 Dist. 5), who led 1-0 at halftime.

Emily Stevens converted a 55-yard free kick for Cascade Christian (3-2-1, 1-1) in the 50th minute against the Crusaders, who have won five straight.

LAKEVIEW 4, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Rogue River, Lakeview improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in District 5 play with the shutout victory over Rogue River (2-2-1, 0-2 Dist. 5).
