North Medford netters upend Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS — North Medford served tough and played exceptional defense in posting a 23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-17 Southwest Conference volleyball victory Tuesday.

The Black Tornado (6-9, 3-3 SWC) served 12 aces, with Taelor Mayben accounting for a team-high four.

Grants Pass dropped to 12-5 and 4-2 in the SWC.

Karen Polataivao, a North senior middle, had a strong match with 10 kills on 19 swings, as did junior Adriane McLemore, who had four blocks.

Also for the Black Tornado, Kiley Pauck smashed a team-high 15 kills, libero Anna Lorenz had 19 digs and Lauren Barry added 10 digs and two aces.

WILLAMETTE 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: Unforced errors proved costly as South Medford fell 25-16, 12-25, 25-22, 25-23 in Southwest Conference play.

Mac Criswell racked up 28 assists for the Panthers (1-10, overall 0-6 SWC), while Alyssa Vaughn added 11 kills with 25 digs and Chanel Groom 11 kills with 12 digs.

Willamette is 3-10 and 1-5.

ASHLAND 3, THURSTON 0: At Springfield, Ashland swept the MWL road match, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17.

The Grizzlies (6-3, 5-2 MWL) earned their fourth straight MWL victory, while Thurston dropped to 5-6 and 2-4.

Ashland senior outside hitter Myla Norvell had 16 kills and nine digs and senior setter Soleil Heller provided 31 assists. Alex Crane had five kills and seven digs and Marina Tacconi 11 digs for Ashland. Also for the Grizzlies, Stella Bungay had 11 digs.

MARIST 3, CRATER 0: At Central Point, Crater was competitive early in all three games against top-ranked Marist but fell, 25-15, 25-19, 25-14

Sophomore outside Nehkyah Ellis led the Comets (9-6, 4-3 MWL) with nine kills and three digs, while Nicole Morse, a senior outside, contributed eight kills and 10 digs.

Crater defensive specialist Rane Jensen came up with 12 digs and Heather Colmer

added 10.

NORTH VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 0: At Phoenix, North Valley registered its first Skyline victory with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-14.

Phoenix fell to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in conference, while the Knights are 1-3 in league and 6-8 on the season.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, LAKEVIEW 0: At Lakeview, Cascade Christian remained perfect with a 25-13, 25-12, 25-8 Southern Cascade League win.

Allison Winter led the Challengers (15-0, 3-0 SCL) with 37 assists and five of her team’s 13 aces. Claire Hawkins had 11 kills, Caroline McMahon eight kills and Kariss Waldron seven kills in the win.

Lakeview is 2-9 and 1-2.

ST. MARY’S 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: Ashley Rietmann tallied 25 assists for St. Mary’s in a 25-11, 25-19, 26-16 Southern Cascade League victory.

Haley Sheen had eight kills and Aessa Catt and Mckenzie Addington’s nine digs each for the Crusaders (8-10, 3-10 SCL).

RIDDLE 3, ROGUE RIVER 2: At Rogue River, Riddle triumphed, 17-25, 25-14, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8 in the nonconference match.

Junior outside Kobie Gibson paced the Chieftains (4-11) with seven kills and two blocks and senior middle Elly Moulder added six kills and one block.

Rogue River setter Courtney Sakraida dished out 30 assists and Haley Smith pounded five kills and three aces.
