Pirates take over top spot in Skyline

TALENT — In a battle of Skyline Conference unbeatens, the Phoenix boys soccer team’s offense came alive in the second half and polished off a 2-0 victory over Mazama at Colver Field on Thursday.

Following a scoreless first half, Jesus Sixtos tracked down Luis Ascencion’s corner kick and directed in the Pirates’ first goal on a header three minutes into the second half.

Four minutes later, Joe Navas padded the Pirates’ lead, netting from 15 yards on a pass from Jacob Jee.

Phoenix goalkeepers Gio Cook and Jose DeLaCruz combined for the shutout.

The Pirates (5-2, 4-0 Skyline) outshot the Vikings (6-1, 3-1) 21-6 and had a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Girls Soccer

NORTH EUGENE 8, CRATER 0: At Eugene, Crater dropped the Midwestern League match, falling to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2 in league.

North Eugene is 5-1-3 and 2-0.

PHOENIX 2, MAZAMA 2: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix received goals from Liliana Mejia and Lupita Alegria in a Skyline Conference contest in which all the scoring was done in the first half.

The Pirates moved to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the Skyline.

Volleyball

GRANTS PASS 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: At Grants Pass, South Medford’s struggles with serve receive prevented it from getting into its offense and Grants Pass took advantage, 25-19, 25-10, 18-25, 25-23, in the Southwest Conference match.

Chanel Groom accumulated nine kills, four aces, three blocks and five digs for the Panthers (1-11, 0-7 SWC), who received 18 digs and four kills from Alyssa Vaughn and 18 assists from Mac Criswell.

Grants Pass is 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the SWC.

ROSEBURG 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: North Medford was up 25-24 in the final set but Roseburg scored the final three points to seal the Southwest Conference match, 25-20, 25-16, 27-25.

Alex Barry had 25 assists and nine digs, and Anna Lorenz chipped in with 16 digs for the Black Tornado (6-10, 3-4 SWC).

Roseburg improved to 9-2 and 7-0.

CRATER 3, NORTH EUGENE 1: At Central Point, Crater’s Jaden Carothers racked up 40 assists in a 28-26, 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 Midwestern League victory.

Makayla York added 11 kills and five blocks, and Nehkyah Ellis had eight kills and four blocks for the Comets (10-6, 5-3 MWL).

Crater tallied 10 aces against North Eugene, which fell to 5-7 and 3-5.

PHOENIX 3, HENLEY 0: At Phoenix, Phoenix nearly came away with the second set but Henley earned the Skyline Conference sweep, 25-17, 26-24, 25-16.

The Hornets (9-3, 4-1 Skyline) were led by Jessica Northcut’s 11 kills.

The Pirates dropped to 4-9 and 1-4.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ST. MARY’S 0: Cascade Christian tallied 23 aces and rolled to a 25-8, 25-7, 25-5 Southern Cascade League win.

Allison Winter led the way for the Challengers (16-0, 4-0 SCL) with 22 assists and seven aces.

Eeklyn Magee, Karissa Waldron and Caroline McMahon recorded five kills each for Cascade Christian against the Crusaders (8-11, 3-1 SCL).

LAKEVIEW 3, ROGUE RIVER 1: At Rogue River, Rogue River’s Courtney Sakraida put up 24 assists but Lakeview claimed a 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16 Southern Cascade League victory.

Elly Moulder notched nine kills for the Chieftains (4-12, 1-3 SCL), who got four kills and four aces from Kobie Gibson.

PROSPECT 3, MILO 0: At Prospect, Prospect handled Milo 25-19, 25-9, 25-18 to earn the nonleague victory.

Prospect improved to 7-4 overall and Milo fell to 0-5.
